Environmental, Social & Governance

Our vision as an organisation is to transform urban spaces into extraordinary environments. As an integrated developer, contractor and property manager, we are in a unique position to embed sustainable principles right from the initial design of our buildings, creating healthy, vibrant developments that benefit everyone.

Our aim is to create developments that go beyond functionality to create spaces that enhance the wellbeing of the people who live and work in them. This means working to provide space for biodiversity, building in energy efficiency, and minimising waste. Since the start of the BREEAM scheme in 1998, all our buildings have been certified; with over 10 million sq ft of sustainably certified floorspace constructed, we are the largest sustainable developer in the UK.

We are constantly working to ensure that our developments provide the greatest benefit for the people who live and work in them, as well as for our neighbours in the local community. Through ongoing communication with our stakeholders, we have identified four key focus areas for our sustainability strategy, which allow us to tackle our biggest environmental impacts and maintain our commitment to ethical and responsible business.

The Eden Project

We recently announced our partnership with the Eden Project, the first of its kind, to create a model of how biodiversity can thrive in urban environments. The unique and ground-breaking partnership will tackle the challenge of increasing biodiversity within Canary Wharf and provide Eden with a London base.

Climate Action

The climate emergency is by far the biggest crisis facing humanity in the years and decades to come. We’ve produced an ambitious Net Zero Carbon Pathway detailing the steps we’re taking to become net zero carbon by 2030. This pathway is underpinned by our approved Science Based Targets and provides clear KPIs which will help us reach net zero, supporting the global transition to net zero and securing a clean, sustainable future for our children.

Beyond Zero Waste

Canary Wharf is a micro-city located on the River Thames, with over 120,000 people living and working on the Estate every day. This unique environment presents us with an opportunity to tackle waste, creating a culture of reuse where nothing is wasted. In 2019 we were the first commercial district in the world to achieve Plastic Free Communities status from marine conservation charity Surfers Against Sewage, and we are carrying that momentum forward to close the loop on all materials across our construction and management operations to create a truly circular economy.

Better Environment

Wellbeing

With so much of our time being spent inside, it’s important that we create buildings that are not just functional but improve the wellbeing of those who use them. Our wellbeing programme includes KPIs to not only improve the wellbeing of the people who live and work in Canary Wharf, but also support the vast array of biodiversity found on our Estate.

Better Community

Responsible Business

Since we began construction of Canary Wharf in 1987, we’ve been committed to supporting the community we operate in, delivering projects that truly benefit everyone. Through supporting local businesses, volunteering in local schools, engaging our supply chain and tracking and reporting our impacts, we have created a truly responsible business that creates value far beyond the walls of our own offices.
