Young Gymnast Wins Canary Wharf Sports Personality of the Year Accolade
At a glittering ceremony at the East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf last night, 14-year old Tyesha Mattis was named Canary Wharf Sports Personality of the Year. Mattis excelled in 2013, starting the year competing for Great Britain at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney where the team came 2nd to China. Individually, Tyesha won the all-around and vault competition and also got bronze medals for Bars and Floor.
In March, Tyesha went to Liverpool for the British Championships, where she became Junior British Champion, placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Vault, Beam and Floor finals. The final major competition was the European Youth Olympic Festival in Utrecht and here she gained a team silver, 2 bronzes in the all-around and Vault and managed 5th on Bars. While there, Tyesha completed a Silivas on floor in the all-around competition and became the first British woman to complete it.
Canary Wharf Group organised the thirteenth annual Canary Wharf Sports Awards and has, for over 20 years, invested in sport to foster social and economic development in the local area. The awards encourage sporting excellence and participation in East London and the event was attended by over 300 local sports people and administrators as well as a range of local dignitaries, including Tower Hamlets Speaker of the Council Lesley Pavitt; Councillor Gloria Theinel; Chief Executive and Head Coach of London Lions, Vince Macaulay and Co-Chairman of West Ham Football Club, David Gold.
Winners on the evening included:
• Sports Personality of the Year: Tyesha Mattis, Gymnastics
• Junior Team of the Year: Ascension Eagles Prophecy. Formed at the end of 2012, many of the new members had never taken part in cheerleading before. The team pulled together and they won their first competition and were also awarded the Grand Champion title which is given to the highest scoring team of the day. The team went on to place 2nd at the first Nationals of the season, 1st at the European Championships in Paris, and placed 1st at their last National competition of the season. The success achieved by this team across last season was unrivalled by any other team in the Country.
• Senior Team of the Year: FC Bartlett finished the season 2012-13 mid table in the Hackney and Leyton Senior Football League and won the Albert Daniels League Cup. The team was also thrilled to win the Hackney and Leyton Senior Football league ‘Sportsmanship Team of the Year 2012-13’ for the second year running, a rare achievement for any club. This season the team is already demonstrating their quality in the top flight having beaten the league leaders with the possibility of going top of the league by winning their games in hand. These achievements are even more impressive when you take into account that the team only formed in 2011 and were promoted from the First Division at the first time of asking.
• Group Achievement Award: Tower Hamlets BMX club has worked with more than 50 different groups reaching over 1000 young people. From the track in Mile End the club holds regular sessions for all ages and abilities, with specific sessions for bike maintenance, women and girls, deaf adults, local schools and an after-school club that tackles behavioural problems and gang involvement. The club started a 12 week bike maintenance programme for young people and one of the participants has already been signed up to the BikeWorks Pre-Apprenticeship Programme.
John Garwood, Group Company Secretary at Canary Wharf Group plc, said:
“I have been coming to these awards since they began, 13 years ago and never fail to be impressed at the depth of local sporting talent. Tonight we also recognise the excellence of some particularly gifted individuals and teams who we hope can be a true beacon for young sports people across East London. Obviously, special congratulations to Tyesha Mattis for becoming the Sports Personality of the Year; we will follow her gymnastic career with much interest.”
