The Brand New Heavies to perform at Canary Wharf

Thursday 15 March 2012

East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf, London

The Brand New Heavies will bring their unique blend of jazz, funk and soul to the East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf in March 2012. Announced by Canary Wharf Arts & Events, the concert will mark the first time that the venue has hosted a standing only gig, perfect for this group who are bound to get their audience moving. The group’s vocalist for the evening will be the ‘Urban Honey Bee’, Honey Larochelle.

The Brand New Heavies have been lighting up the dance scene for two decades and show no signs of stopping. The founding and ever-present trio of Jan Kincaid, Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy on drums/keyboards, guitar and bass respectively were influential in creating what became known as the acid jazz scene. They have since steered The Brand New Heavies into the current millennium, where they remain as influential and respected as ever.

The Brand New Heavies celebrated their 20th anniversary in late 2011 as they released a 2-CD compilation entitled The Best of 20 Years. The group’s name is in homage to soul godfather James Brown, who was once billed as the ‘Minister of New Super Heavy Funk’. As guitarist, Simon Bartholomew has revealed, “we supported him at Wembley once…And we jammed in front of him. He was like “you guys sound great”. It was mind-blowing for us because he basically invented funk.”

The ‘After Hours with…’ series is a perennial favourite on the Canary Wharf Arts & Events calendar, with concerts by top-quality established and new artists in the spectacular East Wintergarden.

Sian Astrop, Canary Wharf Group’s Arts & Events Manager commented “We have evolved our ‘After Hours with …’ music series by hosting our first ‘all standing’ concert at the East Wintergarden. What a way to start the series in 2012, with The Brand New Heavies and their energetic take on jazz, funk and soul. This is a must see concert in a unique setting with a new format”

Canary Wharf continues to grow its reputation as a leisure destination, attracting visitors to its world-class arts, events, shops, bars and restaurants.
