Sport takes centre stage at Canary Wharf in 2013

Following last year’s spectacular Olympic summer, Canary Wharf Group’s Arts & Events team has lined up another exciting array of sporting events. In addition to last week’s exciting Canary Wharf Squash Classic, won by world number four James Wilstrop, the 2013 programme features Canary Wharf’s first ever beach volleyball championship, along with cycling, table tennis, the Virgin London Marathon and the UK’s largest free to visit Motorexpo.

Canary Wharf is one of the best locations to watch arguably the world’s greatest marathon, which is now in its 33rd year and has raised over £500 million for charity. On Sunday, 21 April the towers, parks and waterside plazas form a spectacular backdrop to the runners going through miles 18 and 19. Canary Wharf’s plentiful cafes, bars, shops and restaurants will keep spectators happy, rain or shine, as they cheer on those gathering their strength for the final push to the finish line.

On Thursday, June 6, The Pearl Izumi Tour Series takes centre stage in Canary Wharf as the UK’s ten best cycling teams go head-to-head after a gruelling two months of competing. This year, Olympic Champion Ed Clancy, World Champion Andy Tennant and Series fastmen Dean Downing, James McCallum and Chris Opie will be giving their all at this exciting competition. This world class cycling event is not to be missed. Kicking off from 6pm will be the The Cyclist Magazine Canary Wharf Corporate Grand Prix, made up of teams of office workers.

Explore the latest vehicles from many of the world’s leading motor manufacturers in this week-long celebration from the 10-16 June. Throughout the week several hundred-thousand car enthusiasts will flock to Canary Wharf for the UK’s largest free to visit motor show and its stunning selection of some of the world’s finest vehicles from BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, to Lotus, Bentley and many more.

Canary Wharf’s big screens showcasing Britain’s popular sporting events will appear in Canada Square Park from 24 June for all to enjoy. With the likes of the F1 Grand Prix, Wimbledon and the British Golf Open, the summer screens make for the perfect setting to enjoy an al-fresco lunch or after work drinks. The summer screens continue until 20 August, so there’s no excuse to miss out.

For the first time ever, Canary Wharf will host three courts of non-stop action, as teams from across London compete in support of charity Action for Kids. Enter a team and join the games or simply come down for fun at the beach from 8–19 July at Wood Wharf.

Ping!, the popular table tennis event returns to Canary Wharf’s Jubilee Place Mall from the 2–10 August. Ping! caters for all ages and abilities – whether you want to learn how to play or take part in the Corporate Challenge or just watch the action. There are professional coaches on-hand to assist and sporting legends competing against each other in showcase matches.
