Sport at Canary Wharf set to steal the spotlight in 2014

The stage is set for another year of unparalleled sporting excitement that caters for all at Canary Wharf. Canary Wharf Group’s Arts & Events team have arranged a programme of events which promises to entertain and inspire visitors and residents alike. From test-driving the latest Jaguar at an unrivalled urban motor show, to witnessing world champions battling it out in the magnificent glass squash court at the East Wintergarden; whether cheering the runners along in the Virgin London Marathon or watching UK champions play beach volleyball for Action for Kids, there is plenty to get involved in this year at Canary Wharf.

Canary Wharf continues to host the longest running ice rink in London, nestled among the skyscrapers of Canada Square Park. Featuring London’s first ‘skate path’; a romantic route through the twinkling spires and trees, the ice rink this year now remains open until 23 February. Lessons are available from The National Ice Skating Association – so there’s no excuse to not give it a try.

London’s premier squash tournament – the Canary Wharf Squash Classic returns to the spectacular East Wintergarden from 24 – 28 March. This year’s event has sold out in record time and organisers are consequently thrilled at how popular it has proved to be. The world’s best players will compete for the tournament title in the gladiatorial glass court in a full week of dramatic sporting action.

Where better to watch the Virgin London Marathon than at Canary Wharf with its extensive vantage points and a whole host of buzzing bars and restaurants. On 13 April, Canary Wharf will host miles 18 and 19 of this celebrated sporting event as spectators line the streets, cheering the runners onwards to the finish line.

On May 10 and 11, 150 plucky thrill seekers will fearlessly descend the 230ft drop down the side of 50 Bank Street. The daring participants will bravely take on this challenge in aid of The English Federation of Disability Sport. Promising to be a once in a lifetime adventure, and with no previous experience required, this event is not to be missed. Training is provided by fully qualified instructors but participants must be over 18. See notes to editors for details on how to apply.

Whether run in fancy dress or even backwards, the Canary Wharf Jog on 21 May still promises the perfect balance between fitness and fun, regardless of ability. This enjoyable 10k run is all in aid of The British Heart Foundation, with vital funds being raised for ground-breaking heart research. Last year 1,500 people took part and donated £35,000 for the nation’s leading heart charity.

World-class cycling competition, The Pearl Izumi Tour Series, takes centre stage at Canary Wharf as some of Britain’s top cyclists battle it out to be crowned the best team in the UK. On 5 June, this annual series of cycling races will kick off, covering an exciting 1.1 kilometre circuit, starting outside HSBC near Canada Square Park and winding through the heart of Canary Wharf. Don’t miss this gripping event involving some of the country’s most adept sportsman.

The UK’s largest free-to-visit motoring event transforms Canary Wharf into an urban stage showcasing the latest creations from the world’s leading motor manufacturers. In a motor show like no other, Motorexpo offers the opportunity to get up close with unrivalled access to the snazziest vehicles the industry has to offer. From 9 – 15 June, marvel at all the latest vehicles and take the exciting opportunity to book a test drive during the show.

Throughout the summer months, from late June to August, the beautifully landscaped Canada Square Park will once again be showing the best of sporting action on the big screen. Whether the sun makes an appearance early this summer or not, why not enjoy a packed programme of sports, entertainment and news highlights, and revel in the exciting atmosphere of this urban¬, alfresco setting. Highlights this year include the major sporting events of the summer, such as the exciting Royal Ascot, the F1 Grand Prix live, the Commonwealth Games, The Wimbledon Tennis Championships and the Scottish Golf Open as well as regular news and current affairs updates from BBC News24 and entertainment from all the BBC channels. F1 enthusiasts will be delighted to know that the screens will be showing highlights and live coverage of the Grand Prix from Britain, Germany, Hungary, Belgium and Austria as the events take place throughout the summer.

One hundred and sixty tonnes of sand will transform Wood Wharf into a volleyball arena as it hosts the fifth annual Action For Kids Beach Volleyball Championships. From 5 – 18 July, this charity challenge will provide an opportunity to try the sport either by entering a team into the Championships or by taking part in a taster session. Wood Wharf will see the top men and women’s UK teams play showcase matches at the weekends, providing a rare opportunity to get competitive with friends or colleagues or cheer them on from the side.

Canary Wharf‘s ever-popular table tennis event Ping! returns from 1 – 10 August. In this fun and competitive sport everyone is welcome to play, compete, learn from professional coaches or just watch sporting legends in showcase matches.
