Summer 2012 – Media Release

With the London 2012 Olympics looming large on the horizon, Canary Wharf is celebrating with its own stellar line-up of sporting events this summer.

The action begins with the astonishing Motorexpo, the UK’s largest free motor show. Hot on its heels is the grand final of the Halfords Tour Series professional cycling race, the inaugural Canary Wharf Triathlon and many of the world’s most important sporting events beamed live onto the Big Screens in Canada Square Park.

The UK’s biggest free motor show, Motorexpo will rev-up proceedings at Canary Wharf from 6 to 12 June. Motorexpo features an impressive array of many of the world’s latest and greatest vehicles from Bentley, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lotus, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Nissan and Vauxhall plus many more.

Other highlights of this year’s event include the Drive The Future zone, giving visitors the chance to get behind the wheel of the latest fuel alternative and low carbon vehicles. The Motorexpo RaceRoom in Jubilee Place Mall gives visitors the chance to test their race driving skills and compete in Canary Wharf’s virtual F1 style championship, up against lap times set by Nigel Mansell.

Throughout the summer, Canary Wharf will bring many of the most prestigious sporting events to the big screen in Canada Square Park. From fast-paced Formula 1 events to the British and Scottish Open Championship golf, Royal Ascot racing and Wimbledon tennis, the Summer Screen programme offers the world’s best sporting events right on the doorstep – perfect for a picnic in the sunshine or an alfresco drink at one of the surrounding bars or restaurants.

Shifting things up a gear in June is the grand final of the Halfords Tour series on Thursday 16 June. Following a testing two months of competitions, Britain’s ten best cycling teams ride into the heart of Canary Wharf for the Grand Final of this gladiatorial contest. Amateur cyclists keen to enjoy a slice of the action and impress their friends and colleagues can take part in the Canary Wharf Corporate Grand Prix – a gripping race that sees Canary Wharf’s biggest corporate names vie for victory.

Those looking for an exhilarating evening of sporting excellence should head to Canary Wharf on Thursday 30 June for the Canary Wharf Triathlon. As part of the British Triathlon Super Series many of the world’s top male and female tri-athletes, including US number one Jarrod Shoemaker, will battle it out beneath the iconic Canary Wharf towers in this Super-Sprint eliminator. Diving into Middle Dock at 6pm, competitors will be whittled down through a series of heats throughout the evening until finalists go head-to-head in a gruelling 400m swim, 10km cycle and 2km sprint to the finish line.

Popular table tennis event PING! returns to Canary Wharf from Friday 22 to Sunday 31 July. Last year’s event unearthed a wealth of table tennis talent from the Canary Wharf community, so this year sees the inaugural Canary Wharf Table Tennis Championships.

For those not quite ready to compete, table tennis legend Desmond Douglas will be inviting budding players to join him at the table for some tips, along with former England and European Champions and professional coaches.

Tower Hamlets’ Morpeth School has produced several national table tennis champions in recent years and students will be in Jubilee Place during the event to show-off their skills.

Canary Wharf is surrounded by London 2012 Olympic venues, including the Olympic Park just two miles to the north. Before the Olympics kicks off in earnest next year, Canary Wharf will also host the ISS Canary Wharf Squash Classic, which displays the world’s best squash players every March; the Canary Wharf Jog raising money for the British Heart Foundation, the Canary Wharf Charity Abseil and plenty more. Its bars, restaurants and parks make it one of the best locations to view the Virgin London Marathon, which runs through Canary Wharf every Spring. Every January it hosts the Canary Wharf Sports Awards, celebrating the best of local sporting talent.

Canary Wharf Group invests strategically in sporting excellence and participation in the local community, which has unearthed some of the UK’s best sporting talent.

Sian Astrop, Arts & Events Manager at Canary Wharf Group plc says:
“We are getting in shape this summer at Canary Wharf in preparation for the London’s Olympic Games, with two world class events along with a full schedule of interactive sporting activities. On top of all of this, we are excited to welcome back UK’s biggest free motor show, Motorexpo, for its sixteenth year! Once again our Summer Screens will be broadcasting live sporting action from the BBC with Wimbledon and The Golf Opens and with interactive screen sporting games, live table tennis and cricket challenges we are sure to be fit in time for 2012.”
