Canary Wharf Group Launches 2016 Sports Personality of the Year Awards

Canary Wharf Group has today launched its annual Sports Personality of the Year Awards to celebrate the top sporting talent in our East London community

We are seeking nominations from members of the public for deserving local athletes, sports clubs and administrators for their achievements in the previous 12 months. The fourteenth annual Awards ceremony will take place on the 11th February 2016 at the East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf, and will be attended by special sporting guests along with a host of local dignitaries. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded in each of the following categories:

  • The Canary Wharf Sports Personality of the Year
  • Senior Sports Team of the Year
  • Junior Sports Team of the Year
  • Sports Group of the Year
  • The Voluntary Sports Commitment Award

Cash prizes and trophies will be won in each category. Entries close on the 18th December 2015.

The ceremony’s premier award will go to the Canary Wharf Sports Personality of the Year whose previous winners have included Olympic athlete Perri Shakes-Drayto, Tyesha Mattis and British Weightlifting Champion Mercy Brown, who won the 2015 award. Applications will be considered from Tower Hamlets and each of the boroughs surrounding it, including Hackney, Newham, Greenwich and Barking & Dagenham.

Zakir Khan, Head of Community Affairs at Canary Wharf Group, says: “When we organised the very first Sports Personality of the Year Awards fourteen years ago we wanted to recognise the success and achievements of local people in their chosen sports, and this remains the case today. It has been so exciting to see some of the early recipients go on to become household names; I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this year’s nominees and winners.”

Local sports people, clubs and administrators interested in submitting a nomination can visit Canary Wharf Sports Personality of the Year Awards 2015 or contact the Community Affairs Team on 020 7537 6474 for further details.
