Canary Wharf Group appoints Landscape Architects for Wood Wharf Development
Canary Wharf Group plc has appointed award-winning landscape architects Peter Walker and Partners Landscape Architecture (PWP Landscape Architecture) to landscape design the 20 acre mixed-use site at Wood Wharf, which sits immediately east of Canary Wharf and is one of central London’s most exciting future waterfront developments.
The firm has been selected to develop the landscape element of the Wood Wharf masterplan. PWP Landscape Architecture’s design brief calls for attractive new waterside parks accommodating a wide range of retail, leisure, cultural and community uses, combined with European style-streets and squares, to complement the environmentally sustainable mixed-use buildings.
PWP Landscape Architecture, a U.S. based firm under the leadership of founding principal Peter Walker, is renowned for a number of its international, high profile landscaping projects, including the National 9/11 Memorial in New York, the Constitution Gardens at the National Mall in Washington D.C. and the Sony Center Plaza in Berlin. The firm has developed a tradition of design that responds to its environment and delivered projects in some of the world’s most physically complex urban environments.
The outline Wood Wharf masterplan, which is currently being drawn up by architects Terry Farrell and Partners, aims to build on Canary Wharf’s success and create the next generation of business space, shops, bars and restaurants, new homes and cultural amenities. The scheme will respond to changing market conditions and reflect an evolution of commercial buildings towards flexible, bespoke space for dynamic business growth sectors. There are opportunities to cater for a mixture of future tenants such as IT services and new media companies.
Robert Maguire, Project Director for Wood Wharf said: “We are delighted to welcome PWP Landscape Architecture on to the team to develop the landscape design for Wood Wharf. They will be working closely with architects Sir Terry Farrell and Partners to help realise our plans for this new creative district, which will contribute materially to the continued regeneration of inner East London.”
Peter Walker, founding principal of PWP Landscape Architecture said: “We are excited by the new Wood Wharf project. It is a complex building and open-space challenge and we are delighted to have been selected. We look forward to working with Terry Farrell and the Canary Wharf Group.”
Canary Wharf Group acquired the full rights to develop the Wood Wharf site in January 2012 from previous joint venture partners Canal and River Trust (previously British Waterways) and Ballymore. In September last year the Group appointed Terry Farrell and Partners to develop a new masterplan, and will be appointing architects for individual buildings in the coming months, as the masterplan progresses.
The 20 acre site already has a previous outline planning approval for 4.7m sq. ft. of mixed use office, retail and residential space, about one third of the size of the existing Canary Wharf estate. The consultation process for the new masterplan began in autumn 2012, with an application for a new outline planning permission expected to be submitted in spring 2013. It is anticipated the scheme will be developed in phases over 10-12 years with the first phase commencing in 2014. Part of the development is expected to be open in time for Crossrail trains running through Canary Wharf from 2018.
In mid-2012, Canary Wharf Group appointed Eric Van Der Kleij to help shape the Group’s vision for future development, including encouraging companies in growth sectors such as technology, media and telecommunications to locate themselves in Canary Wharf. In early 2013 the Group is launching Level39 at One Canada Square, Canary Wharf; an accelerator space for technology companies innovating in financial services, helping to converge London’s technology and financial worlds.
