Canary Wharf ‘cuts the ice’ at the launch of its Winter Ice Rink

On Friday 11 November, Canary Wharf unveiled its spectacular Winter Ice Rink set amongst the iconic skyscrapers and twinkling Christmas lights of Canada Square Park.

‘Cutting the ice’ for the very first time this season, pupils from 10 secondary schools across Tower Hamlets took to the rink, before opening the floor to Dancing on Ice star, Clare Buckfield and IceAct to perform the breathtaking Moulin Rouge – Circus.

Inspired by such theatrical circus acrobatics, guests were then invited to don a pair of skates and glide into the festive spirit, for the opening night of the longest running ice rink in the Capital. Meanwhile, the rinkside log cabin The Moose provided glasses of warming mulled wine and a tempting array of Wahaca Mexican treats for those keen to stay wrapped up warm inside.

Also on hand was local Olympic hopeful Julia Lydall – a local Tower Hamlets resident and 10m air pistol and sport pistol competitor. Taking a break from her rigorous training schedule, Julia swept onto the ice adding a touch of Olympic glamour to the occasion!

Returning for its seventh successive season, the Canary Wharf Ice Rink will be buzzing with fun and festivity throughout the coming winter months until Sunday 19 February 2012. Surrounded by an impressive 200 shops, bars and restaurants, the rink is the perfect addition to a day’s Christmas shopping and offers arguably the best outdoor skating facilities in London – including brand new sharpened, high-quality hire skates – and a beautiful iconic backdrop.

Camille Waxer, Chief Administrative Officer at Canary Wharf Group plc comments: “Canary Wharf really comes alive at Christmas, it buzzes from the moment the festive lights turn on to when the last skater leaves the ice in February.”

Brian Jokat, Managing Director of Skateco UK Limited, adds: “I am really excited about the start of our seventh season here – we are hoping that this will be our best ever. With such a fantastic array of food and drink both at the rink and in the Wharf, we are looking forward to welcoming everyone to London’s finest rink!”
