Additional architects appointed for Shell Centre redevelopment

Canary Wharf Group plc and Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company have appointed three additional architects – Kohn Pederson Fox, Patel Taylor and Grid Architects – to design buildings in the mixed use redevelopment of the Shell Centre on London’s South Bank.

In addition to their role as masterplan architects, Squire and Partners will work alongside the three firms to design individual buildings for office and residential use within the site, and also with Townshend Landscape Architects who were appointed by the developers in March.

All the design proposals that are currently being considered are subject to an extensive public consultation process which started earlier this year. Thus far, around 1,000 members of the local community have already contributed towards the consultation process, with many additional people due to be consulted in coming months.

A spokesperson for the developers said: “Our aim is to re-energise the area with new, dynamic buildings and high quality public spaces that will complement recent and future developments.”

About the Shell Centre Redevelopment

In July 2011 developers Qatari Diar and Canary Wharf Group signed an agreement with Royal Dutch Shell to redevelop the Shell Centre site on London’s South Bank. The developers will take the 5.25 acre site on a 999 year lease, with Shell remaining the freeholder. The development will be mixed use comprising office, retail and residential space, subject to public consultation and planning consent.
The well known, 27 storey tower in the middle of the Shell Centre is retained and occupied by Shell. Shell will also take a 210,000 sq. ft. pre-let of one of the new office buildings to be constructed on the site. Shell is committed to returning its entire London workforce back to the redeveloped site on completion.
