Winners of the Wildlife Photography Competition 2019 Announced – 10.12.19

We are pleased to announce that the winners of the Canary Wharf Wildlife Photography Competition 2019 have been chosen, with winners announced at an awards ceremony on Friday 6th December.

Now in its fifth year, the competition is open to all amateur photographers and invites residents, employees, tenants and visitors to photograph the diversity of flora and fauna on the Canary Wharf estate.

Last month, 30 shortlisted entries were displayed in an exhibition at Adams Plaza Bridge.  From these shortlisted entries, a winner from each category was selected.

The winner of the “Junior (under 12)” category was Izzy Broome with her striking close-up Thirsty. Nathan Phua snagged the “Junior (12 – 18)” prize with Abstraction of Citigroup Centre.  Dean Scott submitted I Can’t Stand the Rain which secured the “Street Photography” prize, and Derek Bezuidenhout won the “Wildlife and Water” category with his stunning Goldfinch Portrait.  Leaving the “Up Close and Personal” prize to go to Sean Batten with Pollinator and “Architecture” to Elena Chaykina for her Crossing a Bridge.

From these category winners, the overall winner of the 2019 Wildlife Photography Competition was Derek Bezuidenhout with his exquisite Goldfinch Portrait taken in the Crossrail Place Roof Garden.

Derek said “Walking through Crossrail Place Roof Garden, I was charmed by the “beep beep” chatter of a group of Goldfinches.  Over a few days I established there are at least a dozen birds that frequent the Garden, and they may even be nesting there.”

This year’s Directors Choice Award and £250 Canary Wharf Gift Card winner is Candy Blackman with Bubbling Up.  The directors also highly commended Nigel Boulton with Feeding Time and Stef Stelea with Rainbow.

The Junior (under 12) winner received a camera to the value of £150 and the Junior (12 – 18) received a £150 Canary Wharf Gift Card. The winner of each adult category received a £250 Canary Wharf Gift card, with the overall winner receiving a further £750 Canary Wharf Gift Card
