In support of Walk to Work Day on Friday 5th April, 27 Canary Wharf Group employees will be swapping trains and buses for trainers on their morning commute. The team aims to cover approximately 190 miles and will be walking to One Canada Square, Canary Wharf from homes as far away as Bishops Stortford in Hertfordshire (30 miles) as well as Waterloo (4.7 miles), Clapham (5.5 miles), Kings Cross (5.8 miles), Camden Lock (6.8 miles) and many more.
National Walk to Work Day is an annual event aimed at encouraging people to get out more and reap the mental and physical benefits that walking can offer. Not only can increasing your step count help keep you fit, it can reduce the risk of health conditions, improve mental health, lower commuting costs, reduce your carbon footprint and help the environment.
Canary Wharf Group’s Walk to Work participants are expected to save 23kg of CO2 emissions by swapping their usual form of transport for trainers, in addition to burning a total of 13,000 calories between them. Canary Wharf Group’s Director of Residential Sales, Brian De’ath, will be undertaking the lengthiest journey of all, walking to Canary Wharf from his home in Bishops Stortford, a trip that will take him 9 hours and will see him set off at midnight.
Brian De’ath, Director of Residential Sales at Canary Wharf Group, comments; “Commuting can be stressful, especially when there are unexpected delays on the trains. Taking time out to walk to the office will allow us to appreciate the benefits that it can bring, and I’m looking forward to the change of scenery. Walking definitely beats a stuffy train carriage, although I’m not sure I will have the energy to walk 30 miles every day!”
This achievement comes as Canary Wharf Group released the results of a Walk to Work survey, in which 67% of Londoners said they would be happier living nearer the workplace, and half of those surveyed said they would walk to work regularly if they lived closer. These findings come as the Canary Wharf Estate is set to welcome its first ever homes in its new neighbourhood, Wood Wharf.
Wood Wharf’s very first residential development, 10 Park Drive, is a 345-apartment building by Stanton Williams. Apartments are available from £595,000 and the first residents are due to move in at the start of 2020.
