This Diwali, Canary Wharf Group (CWG) welcomes a captivating new art installation Genda and Mandala by British Indian artist Saroj Patel. From Saturday 26 October to Monday 4 November, Jubilee Place mall will be transformed into a vibrant celebration of culture, identity, and light, embodying the spirit of Diwali.

Patel’s installation features intricate, colourful sculptures crafted from traditional Indian materials such as sari fabrics, bells, and glass beads. Each piece reflects the artist’s exploration of themes such as migration, race, identity, and gender, creating an immersive experience that resonates deeply with the festival’s essence.

Diwali, the biggest and brightest of the Hindu celebrations, marks the triumph of light over dark and good over evil, celebrated across the globe.

When talking about her installation, artist Saroj Patel shares: “I’m thrilled to have Genda and Mandala exhibited in Canary Wharf in celebration of Diwali, a festival symbolising the triumph of light over darkness and hope over despair. Inspired by Indian traditions and culture, these sculptures celebrate light, renewal, togetherness and positivity. It’s an honour to contribute to this meaningful cultural moment in such an iconic London space. “

Lowri Harries, Associate Curator, Public Art at CWG, adds: “We’re delighted to present these two wonderfully vibrant and textured sculptures in celebration of Diwali. Equally, we’re really excited to be working with such a multifaceted artist such as Saroj Patel, who is able to convey so much through her work. Each element of Genda and Mandala offers a unique perspective on the often complex and conflicting aspects of celebrating cultural traditions as a British Indian artist. The work creates a compelling visual narrative that celebrates Canary Wharf as a vibrant, diverse, and connected neighbourhood, and that will hopefully resonate with many of our visitors.”
