Newfoundland wins two WhatHouse? awards – 26.11.21

Canary Wharf Group’s Newfoundland has won two WhatHouse? awards, including Best Exterior Design (Silver) and Best Build to Rent Project (Bronze)

Newfoundland, the tallest Build to Rent tower in the UK, has been awarded Best Exterior Design (Silver) and Best Build to Rent Project (Bronze) at this year’s WhatHouse? Awards.

The WhatHouse? Awards, which have been running for more than 40 years, recognise customer-focused housebuilders delivering the best new homes across Britain.

Owned and managed by Vertus, Canary Wharf Group’s residential leasing arm, Newfoundland is one of the most striking buildings in the UK, with its distinctive diagrid design easily recognisable across London’s skyline.

Designed by award-winning London architects Horden Cherry Lee (HCL), the 58-storey building comprises 636 stylish and modern apartments, from studios to three-bedrooms, offering uninterrupted views eastwards over Canary Wharf and Docklands and westwards towards the City.

Commenting on the design of the building, the WhatHouse? judges said: “The exterior design of Newfoundland is instantly recognisable with its warm silver diagrid distinguishing it from its commercial office neighbours in Canary Wharf, providing an impressive focus to the west end of Middle Dock. We were particularly impressed with the clever way the massive structural diagrid masks the apartments’ Juliet balconies – an intelligent idea that preserves the coherence of the overall design.”

Alastair Mullens, Managing Director, Vertus added: “Newfoundland has quickly developed a reputation for being one of the most distinctive Build to Rent buildings in the UK, and these fantastic accolades further build on that reputation. Build to Rent is increasingly being recognised as an excellent housing tenure that suits many different types of tenants, providing them with instant access to best-in-class design, amenities and service, resulting in a high-quality day-to-day experience and improved quality of live.”

Residents of Newfoundland benefit from a programme of resident-curated clubs as well as an ongoing programme of social events organised by a dedicated team. With an elegantly designed lounge and a games room, Newfoundland also features a large, west-facing terrace, BBQ and two children’s play areas, as well as co-working areas with high-speed internet and state-of-the-art gym. Residents have access to a private dining room, which can be booked for special occasions, and there is also a screening room with a wide-screen TV and games consoles, suited to a variety of different uses.

A 24-hour concierge is in place to assist residents with enquiries and receive parcels, ensuring a seamless experience as well as safety and security.
