Newfoundland wins Residential High Rise Development category at the 2021 International Property Awards – 02.11.21

Vertus, Canary Wharf Group’s residential leasing arm is delighted to announce that its Newfoundland development has won its category at the coveted 2021 International Property Awards.

The accolade celebrates the outstanding architecture of Newfoundland, the tallest Build-to-Rent tower in the UK, designed by award-winning London architects, Horden Cherry Lee. Standing over 58-storeys and comprising 636 stylish and modern apartments, from studios to three-bedrooms, Newfoundland is an architectural and engineering masterpiece redefining the London skyline with uninterrupted views eastwards over Canary Wharf and Docklands and westwards towards the City and rest of the capital.

The International Property awards recognise the highest levels of achievement in real estate, development, architecture and interior design in both residential and commercial sectors. With sustainability, high living standards, ergonomics, originality and creativity at the forefront of judges’ decisions. The London judging round celebrates the very best of what the UK has to offer, with 40+ categories split across 4 key sectors: Architecture, Interior Design, Development and Real estate. An International Property Award is a world-renowned mark of excellence and recognises only the most outstanding properties.

For the Residential High Rise Development award, the panel of expert judges considered in depth how location, architectural merit, interior design, sustainability, layout, appearance and finish contributed to a development of outstanding quality, worthy of international recognition.

Newfoundland’s design is remarkable due the site running directly above the Transport for London’s (TFL) Jubilee Line, which meant several challenges during the construction process. The scheme’s distinctive slim design and unique diamond façade were determined by the narrow footprint of the site and diagonal alignment of the surrounding streets.

The design brief further required optimisation of pedestrian movement around the base of the building, sustainability features, and access to stunning views of the Thames. By surpassing these requirements and challenges, Newfoundland is a striking new landmark development for Canary Wharf.

Alastair Mullens, Managing Director, Vertus comments: “Newfoundland, the tallest Build to Rent scheme in the UK is the latest milestone in the exciting development of the Canary Wharf estate as a place to live, work and play. Carefully thought-out engineering and architectural processes were implemented to create the remarkable diagrid structure and it is a great achievement for this work to be recognised by this accolade.’’

Residents benefit from Newfoundland’s Vertus Plus amenity spaces, which span 13,000 sq. ft and includes a cosy residents’ lounge that features automatic wine dispensers, coffee machines and games such as a shuffleboard. There is also a private rentable dining space with private kitchen and fitness studios which offer virtual classes and a sizeable gym. Completing the Vertus Plus amenities is a tranquil terrace garden that looks out across the River Thames.
