- For the second year, Canary Wharf Group (CWG) has teamed up with Tech-Takeback running a tech donation bank in Canary Wharf
- The tech donation pop up can be found in Jubilee Place mall from Tuesday 18th to Thursday 20th February, where people can donate unwanted laptops, mobile phones, and tablets
- All donated devices will be data-erased before being given to local communities
This initiative allows people to donate unwanted tech to benefit the local community of Tower Hamlets. Donated tech will be data-erased and given to local community partners to help reduce digital exclusion.
Last year, CWG collected around 400kg of tech, including 142 laptops, 62 mobile phones, and 23 tablets. 6.3 tonnes CO2e Scope 3 emissions were saved as a result of reuse and 16.7 tonnes of materials was conserved by avoiding the need for mining rare earth materials. We also donated a proportion of laptops to ELBA, a local charity that supports residents facing digital exclusion.
The pop-up will be located in Jubilee Place mall, next to Circle Collective, from Tuesday 18th to Thursday 20th February, open to the public from 10am-6pm daily. Over 60% [1] of waste electrical and electronic equipment disposed of could be reused after minor repairs, making donations to Tech Takeback a sustainable and impactful choice.
In 2024, Tech-Takeback collected over 6,100 items across all its locations, weighing nearly 10 tonnes. More than 2,500 reused tech items were donated to charities, with over 300 supporting digital inclusion. Additionally, 1,800 items were recycled, saving 152 tonnes of Scope 3 emissions.
This initiative aims to help residents, workers, and visitors declutter while extending the life of refurbished items and preventing landfill waste. Daily educational workshops will be held in-store. To encourage people to donate their old tech to a good cause, Ole and Steen will be giving away vouchers to donators, available daily on a first come first served basis. Tech Takeback donors will also be entered into a competition for a chance to win the ultimate Clays experience for six people.
After donating, visitors can enjoy numerous activities across the Wharf with more than 320 shops and over 80 cafes, bars and restaurants. For those wanting an activity you can pick from The Cube, Electric Shuffle and Fairgame, or explore the neighbourhoods parks and green spaces.
