Canary Wharf Group has revealed that construction on the first two phases of its 23-acre, 5m sq ft ‘New District’ is on track to be completed by 2022. Through a series of never-before-seen images of the building site, the scale and progress of the project can clearly be seen.
The New District will bring 3,300 new homes to the area and see the creation of a new community with a two-form primary school, medical facilities, a hotel, a health club and extensive ground level retail. The new retail will feature independent retailers and be targeted at the needs of the new residential community.
A centrepiece of the development is the first UK residential venture for Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron – One Park Drive. The eye-catching cylindrical structure will be a landmark for London when complete and features 483 luxury apartments across 58 storeys. Other residential buildings include 10 Park Drive by renowned architects Stanton Williams, bringing 343 apartments, and is expected to be the first of the new residential developments to be complete.
As well as residential property, the extension to the existing Canary Wharf estate will have 2m sq. ft. of office space, 380,000 sq. ft. of retail space and over eight acres of public spaces, squares and parks. The site will also create over 17,000 new jobs through the new offices, hotel, leisure and recreational facilities.
The development will complement Canary Wharf’s already vibrant lifestyle offering, which already includes a year-round arts and events calendar and a wide range of restaurants, bars and shops, and broaden its expanding cultural, community and commercial offer.
The New District in numbers
- 23-acre site
- 5m sq ft mixed use development
- Over 3,300 new homes, including 25 per cent affordable housing on site
- Over eight acres of public spaces, squares and parks
- Over 17,000 new jobs
- 117,000,000 litres of concrete (enough to fill 47 Olympic-sized swimming pools)
- 150,000 cubic metres of earth (almost enough to fill the Royal Albert Hall twice)
- 1,463 foundation piles; 147 marine piles
Mark Taylor, Operations Executive, Canary Wharf Group Contractors, said “Not only is this one of the biggest construction sites in the capital, the hugely ambitious project has an equally ambitious timeline. The site’s proximity to the docks and position over the Jubilee Line involves some seriously complex engineering solutions.
“Nevertheless, the 800-strong workforce are making amazing progress and are motivated by the fact that their work is helping to realise a whole new part of London. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but we’re pleased to announce that we’re on track to be completed as planned.”
Brian De’ath, Director of Residential, comments “The New District is a major investment for the Group and one of the most ambitious projects in the capital to date. We’re not just creating new homes, we’re building a brand-new neighbourhood. A key part of the planning process was to create a sense of community and a space which complements the existing restaurants, shops and bars, as well as excellent transport links, to make Canary Wharf the place to live and work in London.”
Completion of the first part of the development will follow the arrival of Crossrail in 2018. Once the Crossrail station opens, Canary Wharf will be only six minutes to Liverpool Street, within 39 minutes of Heathrow and moments from City Airport and international train services to Europe.
