CWG’s Wood Wharf Wins Property Week Placemaking Award 2022 – 10.06.22

We are delighted to announce that Canary Wharf Group’s Wood Wharf development has won Property Week’s Placemaking Award.

Wood Wharf is Canary Wharf’s new neighbourhood, comprising 3,600 new homes, 2million sq ft of office space, 350,000 sq ft of retail space and over nine acres of public spaces, squares and parks. Over 33% of Wood Wharf is dedicated to parks, boardwalks and gardens, delivering 3.6 hectares (8.9 acres) of interconnected public open spaces; an oasis of calm, and one of London’s most well-connected neighbourhoods.

Culture is at the heart of the new district which includes public art, events and community initiatives. Wood Wharf features every tenure of housing, including private apartments, high quality build to rent apartments, intermediate housing and social housing owned and managed by the Canary Wharf Group (CWG). Wood Wharf is an exceptional and integrated new community. We have built a two-form entry primary school, an NHS medical surgery, and a Leisure Facility for all our community’s needs. The project has generated significant benefits for the local borough of Tower Hamlets creating 2330 jobs for local people.

Shobi Khan, CEO of Canary Wharf Group, said: “The delivery and opening of Wood Wharf marks the culmination of more than 15 years of work to transform the largest single brownfield site into a thriving, mixed use neighbourhood. Wood Wharf is a great example of careful placemaking – driven by the principles of sustainability, accessibility, cultural diversity, education, inclusion and innovation.”

The master plan for Wood Wharf was designed by Allies and Morrison and Glenn Howells Architects.

Wood Wharf Phase 1 had a target of 90% diversion from landfill rate for non-demolition waste, and 95% diversion from landfill rate for demolition and excavation waste during construction. All buildings will achieve a minimum of BREEAM Excellent, in line with our mission to create sustainable communities. The first commercial building to be completed, 20 Water Street, has achieved a BREEAM Outstanding rating at design stage, while the entire site has been designed to achieve at least a 45% reduction in overall CO2 emissions relative to Building Regulations Part L 2013 by energy efficient design and a heat and power plant district heating system.
