Cory Riverside Energy and Canary Wharf Group Agree Waste Disposal Partnership – 06.01.21

Cory Riverside Energy has signed a contract with Canary Wharf Group to receive both residual waste and dry mixed recycling produced on the Canary Wharf estate.

Cory Riverside Energy (‘Cory’) has signed a contract with Canary Wharf Group to receive both residual waste and dry mixed recycling (DMR) produced on the Canary Wharf estate.

The contract, which commenced on 1 January 2021, will last for an initial 12-month period. Cory will process all non-recyclable, residual waste created on the Canary Wharf estate at its energy from waste facility in Belvedere and convert it to baseload energy. Meanwhile, DMR will be transported to Cory’s Materials Recycling Facility in Wandsworth, where it will be sorted and sent for recycling.

All waste and recyclables from Canary Wharf will be loaded on to Cory’s barges at the Northumberland Wharf Transfer Station and transported by river. Overall, Cory’s use of the Thames to transport London’s waste saves 100,000 truck journeys a year, making London’s streets cleaner and safer for other road users.

Commenting on the contract, Dougie Sutherland, CEO of Cory Riverside Energy, said: “We’re delighted to work with the Canary Wharf Group to process their residual waste and DMR and to ensure that this is done within London’s boundaries. This is a great contract for Cory, and I look forward to the future of our partnership.”

Phil Tweddle, Managing Director – Operations Infrastructure, Canary Wharf Group, said: “The Canary Wharf estate aims to be as sustainable as possible. Appointing Cory to dispose of our residual waste and dry mixed recycling is a natural extension of this ambition. It’s good to know that our waste is being put to good use, and helping to power the city that we are based in.”
