The evolution of Canary Wharf is being celebrated in an artistic new campaign titled #UnpredictiveText. Launching on Monday 3rd September, a series of randomly selected words, extracted from the 30-year archive of articles and interviews on Canary Wharf, will be displayed across the Estate.
Created to tell the story of Canary Wharf’s transformation into a richly diverse urban neighbourhood, #UnpredictiveText comprises a series of randomly selected words, taken from the Canary Wharf Group archive and the writing of journalists who have captured the Canary Wharf story. These words have then been entered into a generative algorithm that randomly combines noun, verb and noun to create hundreds of unexpected three-word statements. Randomised, these phrases are the perfect analogy for living at the heart of Canary Wharf.
The next stage of Canary Wharf’s transformation is the development of a brand-new community, Wood Wharf. Situated on 23 acres of reclaimed land, the site is a huge landmark in London’s history, as the need to utilise space for new homes becomes ever pressing.
Master-planned by Allies and Morrison Architects, Wood Wharf will welcome up to 3,600 new homes, 380,000 sq.ft. of retail space, eight acres of public spaces, plazas and parks, a place where residents can live, work and relax. Wood Wharf has now reached a prominent milestone in its development, with the successful installation of Water Street bridge; which connects the original Canary Wharf estate to the new district. The bridge, which experienced a 36-hour voyage across the North Sea from its fabrication site in Belgium, has now been fixed at its permanent home in Canary Wharf.
London’s latest moveable bridge, the 28-metre single-leaf bascule bridge crosses the southern end of Bellmouth Passage to the west side of the new district, adjacent to Canary Wharf’s landmark residential building, One Park Drive. Once open for use, it will provide a road and pedestrian link between Montgomery Square, Canary Wharf and Wood Wharf. With the opening of the Elizabeth Line next year, residents of Wood Wharf will be able to take advantage of Canary Wharf’s unparalleled transport links. This, combined with the current Jubilee underground and Docklands Light Railway networks have ensured Canary Wharf is one of London’s best-connected locations.
This milestone also comes as Wood Wharf’s first residential building, 10 Park Drive, achieved topping out in August. Designed by the internationally renowned Stanton Williams Architects, the building has successfully reached its full height of 149 metres above ground level.
