Winter Lights 2019 brightened both the dark January evenings of Canary Wharf and the eyes of prestigious lighting design judges of the [d]arc awards.
Winning the “Best Creative Lighting Event” category for the second time, the Winter Lights festival has once again proven itself to be a staple in both the London and European light festival calendar. 2019 saw Winter Lights fend off fierce competition from Portugal’s Lisbon Under Stars and Sweden’s Lights in Alingsås, stunning judges with its eclectic collection of installations, and reflective theme of sustainability and waste reduction.
The sixth Winter Lights festival turns on its lights on Thursday 16 January until Saturday 25 January 2020, from 4-10pm every day and it’s completely free. With more than 25 installations, some never-before-seen and some returning favourites across the Canary Wharf estate, 2020 is set to be the brightest year yet. Standout pieces include Affinity by Amigo & Amigo, an interactive series of interconnected globes, representing neurons and memories in the brain, alongside Sky on Earth inspired by a night flight over storm clouds where Columbus Courtyard will be transformed into a giant illuminated cloud taking spectators to the sky.
Public Art Curator Keith Watson, Canary Wharf Group, said: “We’re thrilled that Winter Lights has been recognised for a second time by the prestigious [d]arc awards, signalling how much the festival continues to captivate our visitors. With this year’s festival fast approaching we’re excited to showcase the incredible line-up we have for 2020. Get ready to be dazzled.”
