Canary Wharf Welcomes Back Dancing City to the Estate, Celebrating its 25th Year – 02.09.20

The UK’s first full festival since lockdown to be taking place in Greenwich and east London

Open air, socially distanced, vibrant and colourful – Dancing City is set to take over the Estate on Saturday 5th September.

Marking its 25th year, dance performances will be delivered on people’s doorsteps as part of a reimagined programme for a socially distanced world.

Performance highlights include Dulce Compania’s “Rainbow Ballet”, Upswing’s “Catch Me” and Company Chameleon’s “Amaranthine”.  All set to take over the Estate’s alfresco piazzas and landscapes, proving that small can be beautiful.

Dancing city is part of the Greenwich+Docklands International Festival, London’s leading festival of free outdoor theatre and performing arts.

All performances will be free and un-ticketed with audiences limited and managed to ensure the events remain COVID-secure.  And if visitors work up an appetite, they can visit the wide plethora of cafes, bars and restaurants on the Estate including The Alchemist, Franco Manca, Sticks ‘n’ Sushi and many more.

About Greenwich+Docklands International Festival:

Under Bradley Hemmings’ artistic direction Greenwich+Docklands International Festival has become a nationally recognised leader in outdoor arts; commissioning, producing and presenting work by a wide range of UK and international artists. In 2012 Hemmings was Co-Artistic Director for the Opening Ceremony of London 2012 Paralympic Games and since then has gone on to direct other major ceremonies and events including most recently the finale to the Great Exhibition of the North in 2018. In 2016 Hemmings received an MBE for services to culture and disability arts and in 2017 he was awarded the Freedom of the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

Founded in 1996, 2020 marks GDIF’s 25th anniversary with a programme which will celebrate the resilience and achievements of London’s largest and longest established annual festival of free outdoor theatre and performing arts over a period of phenomenal change. GDIF 2020 will take place from 28 August – 12 September 2020 with a programme which will bring together local, national and international artists with participants and audiences in public spaces across Royal Greenwich, the City of London, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Thamesmead. This year’s programme will take a look at some of the deep-rooted issues affecting the world today, whilst acting as a celebration and means of finding common ground in shared public spaces. GDIF forms part of the Royal Greenwich Festivals, an annual series of high-quality events organised by the Royal Borough of Greenwich to celebrate cultural vibrancy. GDIF is supported by Arts Council England as a National Portfolio Organisation.

“What an amazing evening – it lifted the eyes and the spirits” – Audience member, GDIF 2019 Opening Night

“To see a community come together when this circus came to a housing estate in Thamesmead was truly uplifting & the acrobatics were amazing.” – Audience member, Thamesmead

GDIF 2020 has been reimagined to incorporate social distancing and extra safety measures. Extensive risk assessments have been taken out on all sites and events, in line with government guidance and an external health and safety consultant. All communications and marketing plans are being updated to reflect these recommendations and ensure the wellbeing of staff, artists, and audiences.
