Canary Wharf: Hot on the Heels of London’s Great Estates – 30.07.18

Canary Wharf, the district owned and run by Canary Wharf Group (CWG), is emerging as one of the capital’s modern day great estates. A relative newcomer to the exclusive club of London landowning, Canary Wharf has joined the ranks of long-established aristocratic families, who together, own over 1,000 acres of prime real estate across great swathes of Mayfair, Chelsea, Marylebone and Knightsbridge. Within 30 short years, the district has been transformed from 97 derelict acres of wasteland into a flourishing financial, and soon to be residential, neighbourhood.

Under CWG’s careful stewardship, the Estate has become one of the safest, best maintained, connected and most vibrant districts in London. CWG’s coveted position as developer, contractor, owner, freeholder and landlord of the district, has allowed them to carefully shape the future legacy of the Estate. Working alongside world-leading architects and pioneering innovative and sustainable construction methods, Canary Wharf has become a richly diverse community, which combines the finest architecture, new technology, brilliantly curated public art, beautiful public spaces with some of the very best of shopping, restaurants, events and leisure facilities London has to offer.

The next stage of CWG’s placemaking, is the development of a brand-new neighbourhood and community, Wood Wharf. This neighbourhood will welcome up to 3,600 new homes, 380,000 sq.ft. of retail space, eight acres of public spaces, plazas and parks, a place where individuals and families can live, work, relax and play while benefiting from security which provide one of the lowest crime rates in London.  Amongst this will sit lively high streets, boutique shopping arcades, a vast collection of public art, doctor’s surgery and a brand new two-form primary school.

At the heart of Wood Wharf will be One Park Drive, the striking Herzog & de Meuron designed building that will house 483 new apartments. Offering the best in city and riverside living, the apartments will all enjoy stunning views of the surrounding docklands and wider London, as well as private balconies, 24-hour hotel style concierge services and dedicated residents’ amenities.

Brian De’ath, Director of Residential Sales at Canary Wharf Group, comments; “Canary Wharf is one of London’s best run estates, with a vibrant calendar of events, state of the art facilities, beautifully managed green spaces and now, some of the capital’s finest homes. The focus on building communities and creating a lasting legacy has been at the forefront of Canary Wharf Group’s strategy, shifting the capital’s centre of gravity east.”

“For centuries, living on one of London’s private estates has been at the pinnacle of real estate. Canary Wharf Group has a unique position of both being able to learn from the capital’s great estates and utilise modern day construction, architecture and design techniques to shape one of London’s greatest districts. One Park Drive now represents the opportunity to live in a local neighbourhood with all the benefits of being part of a private estate.”

Divided into three distinct typologies, Loft, Cluster and Bay, One Park Drive is set to become a dazzling addition to the London skyline. Situated on floors two to nine, the Loft apartments are designed to make the most of the connection to the surrounding green spaces and waterfront, with generous wraparound terraces framed by fluted terracotta panels, naturally sheltered within the building’s form. This typology includes interiors by Bowler James Brindley, with contemporary, free-flowing spaces, complete with sliding walls, cool resin floors and unique mother of pearl clad bathrooms.

The Cluster apartments, with their interlocking geometric façades, form the heart of the building. With striking interiors by Goddard Littlefair, the Cluster typology contains the greatest variety, with the lower levels connected to the parks and water; the higher floors with the sky. The top floors are home to the Bay apartments, which all boast double-height terraces set back into the building. These properties also feature interiors by Goddard Littlefair, with elegant palettes and cool textures, including concrete walls, timber panelling, pivot doors and natural stone, all of which maximise light.

The development will also offer state of the art amenities designed by GA Design, including a residents’ only health club and gym, cinema room, lounge and elegant entrance lobby.

Surrounding One Park Drive lies one of London’s most extensive series of green spaces, with over 8,000m² of versatile living and roof space, 4 urban parks within 20 acres of green spaces, gardens, squares and fountains. The Estate’s biodiversity plan has also encouraged 5 bat species, numerous bird species, tufted ducks, terns and the famous Canary Wharf seal to settle in the area. These green spaces, wider estate facilities and events are managed by a team of over 1,000 staff working around the clock, who have helped made Canary Wharf one of London’s cleanest and safest districts.

Not held back by the restrictions of historic architecture, Canary Wharf has become one of the most sustainable estates in Europe, achieving zero landfill waste over the last 8 years and using 100% renewable electricity since 2012. 24 buildings on the Estate are BREEAM certified and earlier this year, CWG launched the UK’s first publically accessible deposit return scheme, allowing workers, residents and visitors to easily recycle plastic items.

Home to a daily working population of over 120,000 Canary Wharf has become a blossoming district for technology, finance and media firms. Level39, which opened in 2013, is Europe’s   houses over 200 tech companies and claims to be the worlds most connected technology community; helping to shift the district’s ratio between financial and non-financial tenants to 55:45, compared to 70:30 ten years ago. With the opening of the Elizabeth Line bringing fast connections across and out of London, Canary Wharf is truly set to become one of the world’s most recognisable destinations.
