Canary Wharf Group appoints new Director of Sustainability and shows continued environmental progress in the publication of its 2021 Sustainability Report – 26.10.21

Canary Wharf Group (CWG) has appointed Sophie Goddard as its new Director of Sustainability.

Sophie will build on a decade of strong environmental progress at Canary Wharf, where emissions have been almost halved since 2012 and water consumption reduced by 29% over the last two years. The progress made by the Group is detailed in today’s publication of its Sustainability Report, with major milestones achieved during the year including the setting of science-based targets, publication of the pathway it will follow to achieve net zero by 2030 and its commitment to The Climate Pledge alongside global businesses such as Amazon, Microsoft and Mercedes Benz.

Announcing Sophie’s appointment, Shobi Khan, CEO, CWG, said: “We are making good progress towards becoming net zero carbon by the end of this decade and are delighted to welcome Sophie to the team to help accelerate our progress. Since 1987 we have embedded sustainability into the heart of our developments, creating over 11 million square feet of sustainably certified buildings, and since 2012 have purchased all our energy from renewable sources and sent zero waste to landfill. Sophie’s track record in sustainability and detailed understanding of the built environment will ensure we continue to make rapid progress towards our goals.”

Sophie Goddard commented: “Canary Wharf is one of the most forward-thinking developers in Europe on climate change, setting a Paris-aligned science-based target and almost halving [1]energy emissions since 2012. I’m thrilled to be joining the Group as it cements its climate leadership and look forward to building on the innovative work the team have already done towards making sustainability real.”

Sophie Goddard joins CWG from Balfour Beatty UK Construction Services where she was Head of Environment, Sustainability and Social Value with responsibility for both the regional and specialist businesses. Sophie has over ten years’ experience in the built environment across a variety of sub-sectors and was a core contributor to the updated group strategy.

CWG achieved five Green Stars for its 2020 ESG performance within GRESB (Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark)
