Canary Wharf Celebrates Sukkot – 04.10.17

Between 9th and 11th of October, in celebration of the Jewish festival of Sukkot, Canary Wharf Group will be hosting buffet luncheons for members of the local Jewish community.  The festivities will take place at the ‘Sukkah’ or Tabernacle, specially created for the festival, in the heart of the Canary Wharf Estate in Montgomery Square.

Designed and specially constructed for this occasion every year, the ‘Sukkah’ features a striking exterior with wooden latticing and an intimate interior dining area. This is intended to be reminiscent of the fragile dwellings that the Israelites used during the 40 years they wandered in the desert. The structure showcases the dependence on temporary shelter and protection from God.

The Sukkah will play host to three lunches for the festivities, which will be sponsored by Canary Wharf Group, BGC Partners, the EY Jewish Network and an anonymous donor. Clifford Chance, whose offices overlook the Sukkah, will provide tea for its staff on the Tuesday, along with sponsoring the refreshments for the EY Jewish Network.

Danny Seliger, Canary Wharf Group said: “As part of Canary Wharf Group’s on going dedication to supporting the Jewish faith, we always look forward to celebrating the festivities on the Estate.  We are excited to host the series of luncheons and reunite with members of Stepney Jewish Community Centre, Holocaust Survivors Centre, Rubens House plus many more.”

The festival of Sukkot is a biblical Jewish holiday which reflects on the shelter of the Israelites in the desert.  Throughout Sukkot, meals are traditionally eaten inside the Sukkah; it is an important time for reflection and is one of the major events in the Jewish calendar.
