Award-Winning Crossrail Place at Canary Wharf Adds to its Collection – 01.08.16

Canary Wharf’s newest leisure development, Crossrail Place, has been presented with a host of awards. Home to one of London’s most stunning roof gardens, as well as Canary Wharf’s most recent shopping mall, Crossrail Place has now won the ‘Transport and Infrastructure’ award at the New London Awards 2016.

Designed by Foster + Partners, the award-winning Crossrail Place is representative of Canary Wharf’s maritime heritage, evoking an old clipper and contains a large, exotic roof garden designed by Gillespies. With several awards already under its belt, including the GE UK Award for Technical Excellence, the ICE London Civil Engineering and the ‘Best Urban Regeneration Project’ at this year’s Mipim awards. Crossrail Place has been recognised as being both technically and visually impressive.

The most recent achievement took place at the New London Awards 2016, which recognised the Capital’s best new projects and their architectural design and quality. Due to its development as a lifestyle destination and the connection made with the local community, Crossrail Place was awarded the ‘Transport and Infrastructure’ award.

As well as being awarded for its innovative design, Crossrail Place has a diverse summer programme of festivals, performances, workshops, family shows and music, which takes place at a performance space nestled in the heart of the exotic roof garden. With the addition of the Big Easy, Chai Ki, Sticks n Sushi and Everyman Cinema, Crossrail Place has proved to be a flourishing destination with a thriving lifestyle, community and retail offering.

Michael Bryant, Operations Executive at Canary Wharf Management Limited said “It’s really great to have the NLA Judges recognise our goal of improving the connectivity between the adjacent businesses and surrounding residential areas. Crossrail Place has already become a destination in its own right, being fully integrated with the major new transport hub of the Canary Wharf Crossrail station, which will start being served by the Elizabeth Line in December 2018. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase how strategic transport infrastructure can serve as an example for public realm improvements.   Our particular thanks go to Foster + Partners, Gillespies and the support from Adamson Associates and our Trade Contractors for the high quality of their work.”

Ben Scott, Partner at Foster + Partners said “This is an incredible honour – Crossrail Place provided a great opportunity to design a building that could further the main aim of the Crossrail project – to open up London from east to west. Its emblematic form is now synonymous with Crossrail itself. We would like to thank our clients Canary Wharf for being supportive throughout, the design and construction teams for their unparalleled dedication, and the NLA for this wonderful recognition.”

Judges of the NLA awards added Crossrail Place was ‘an amazing building’ for the way it helps – through its garden, retail and bars – to bring alive the ‘back end’ of the Canary Wharf development, which has been seen as a moat or point of division from local communities.

Jerome Frost, Director of Planning at Arup, Expert Assessor for the category said “This doesn’t only provide a destination in itself but also acts as a bit of a bridging point for those communities”

This summer, Crossrail Place welcomes the Late Bloom festival, which is a weekend of family-friendly performances by local community groups, from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th August.

Crossrail Place will also play host to a range of performances including:

  • Late Bloom Festival, featuring a range of community performers, Thursday 4th – Sunday 7th
  • Bobbin, presented by Tea Break Theatre Company, Tuesday 16th August, 2pm
  • Ash, presented by Bric a Brac Theatre, Thursday 25th august , 7pm
