A new way to live: Canary Wharf Group launches loft style apartments at 8 Harbord Square – 19.06.23

Canary Wharf Group has launched 8 Harbord Square, a collection of 82 loft style apartments for the creatively adventurous, marking the latest chapter in the Estate’s residential portfolio.

Inspired by the history of the London Docklands and influenced by the warehouse districts of Lower Manhattan in New York, 8 Harbord Square is a unique addition to the growing residential offering in Canary Wharf.

Located in the heart of Wood Wharf, the new 23-acre neighbourhood within the Canary Wharf estate, 8 Harbord Square is surrounded by a high-quality mix of amenities and facilities.

Docklands heritage meets New York City

Designed by leading architecture practice Karakusevic Carson Architects, the homes at 8 Harbord Square are offered in two styles – the 809 sq ft Prospect loft and 1,037 sq ft Gramercy loft, all of which are completely open plan with no fixed walls, meaning purchasers can enjoy lifelong autonomy to shape their homes to match their lifestyle. The only fixed elements within the apartments are the kitchens and bathrooms.

Internally, two show apartments have been dressed and furnished in two separate configurations to highlight the multifunctionality and flexibility of these open-plan homes. The first show apartment has been furnished with two-bedroom areas, with glass, metal and timber wardrobe systems and a separate study, living and dining space. The second show apartment has been dressed as a one bed, with four key zones comprising the kitchen, living, study and bedroom area – all of which are separated by cleverly orchestrated practical objects. The main intention in the furnishing of these homes is to establish ‘soft borders’ with furniture, creating a smooth transition between spaces whilst still clearly defining private zones without blocking natural light.

Having taken inspiration from the London Docklands, design elements include exposed interior features, large industrial-style windows and engineered timber flooring. Externally, the building’s red brick façade has been inspired by apartment buildings found throughout Manhattan in New York, creating a key visual point of interest that sets the building apart from its surroundings.

Brian De’ath, Managing Director of Residential Sales at Canary Wharf Group, said: “8 Harbord Square offers something completely different to the existing apartment buildings in Canary Wharf. Inspired by the industrial heritage of the docks, as well as the loft-style living of New York City, it brings a new style to the Estate that encapsulates the current evolution of the estate – being surrounded by world class amenities, incredible green and blue spaces, and vibrant restaurants and bars. We’ve also got some of the best transport connections in London, with direct services to Heathrow via the Elizabeth line and easy access to the West End. When you add the privacy and security of the Estate to that mix, it’s easy to see the appeal of living here.”

The ground floor levels of 8 Harbord Square will provide commercial and retail spaces. Residents will enjoy direct access to Harbord Square Park, whilst the building is opposite The Lanes, a high street-style offering which will be home to a mix of shops, bars and restaurants. Just around the corner, residents will also have access to a sunny boardwalk and Harbour Quay Gardens.

Once complete, Wood Wharf will comprise up to 3,600 new homes, 350,000 sq ft of shops and restaurants, 2 million sq ft of office space, a new NHS doctor’s surgery and two-form primary school. Amongst this will sit lively high streets, green public spaces, and walkways.

For leisure, the Estate is already home to an eclectic range of activities, including a colourful nine-hole minigolf course, the UK’s fastest electric go-karts at Capital Karts, GoBoats, soak up the sun by cruising through the tranquil docks, open water swimming and volleyball, dodgeball, and other indoor sports at In2Sports. FairGame, a revolutionary fairground-inspired food and beverage venue, opened last year, whilst this summer, Canary Wharf Group will be opening Padium, a premium padel club.

Additionally, residents and visitors benefit from the wider amenities found across Canary Wharf, including 300 shops, the UK’s largest free-to-visit award-winning public art collection, and over 100 culturally inspired events each year, most of which are free including the popular Winter Lights festival and Festival14.
