A Message from Sir George Iacobescu at Eid – 23.05.20

This week, Canary Wharf marked Ramadan with a special event hosting the evening Call to Prayer in Cabot Square, and lighting the top of One Canada Square tower green for Ramadan.

Eid is a time for family and community. We are all part of a community and family here at Canary Wharf.

In normal times,  every year we have hundreds of people praying in the East Wintergarden during Ramadan but unfortunately now we are missing all our Muslim colleagues and friends because of the lockdown.

Ramadan is also a time to reflect on and celebrate the role Muslim people play in our lives. Every aspect of our lives here is intertwined with, and enriched by, the Muslim community and not just because we are part of Tower Hamlets, which has one of the highest Muslim populations in the UK.

Canary Wharf is a community which simply would not work if it were not for the contribution of our Muslim colleagues and friends.

The estate has been built and is operated by Muslims working together with people of all faiths and none. Muslim security guards, Muslim architects and engineers, Muslim bankers, Muslim CEOs and Muslim shareholders, too, because Canary Wharf Group’s owners include the Qatari Investment Authority.

Canary Wharf is a hub for people and ideas from all over the world and we are proud of that. That’s why we welcome the cultural engagement between Islam and the rest of the world which over centuries has resulted in some of mankind’s greatest achievements.

In these days when every country around the world is facing the challenge of the Coronavirus, we are coming closer together as a community. We must all stand together with our friends and neighbours. We at Canary Wharf will always stand by you.

During Ramadan I know that Muslim people across Tower Hamlets have been thinking about those less fortunate than us. At Canary Wharf we are pleased to have been able to support local mosques and community groups with emergency funds to help during the crisis.

I would like to thank all of those who are working in our community to support the most vulnerable during these difficult days.

I wish everyone good health and happiness.

Eid Mubarak
