Sea Lanes Canary Wharf

Sea Lanes Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf Group (CWG) is in the process of developing proposals for a new open water swimming, health and wellbeing destination as a temporary use at Eden Dock.

This proposal forms part of a broader initiative to offer a diverse range of spaces and facilities for those visiting, living and working in Canary Wharf.

We plan to partner with the highly regarded Sea Lanes, operator of the UK’s first National Open Water Swimming Centre in Brighton.

The proposals are intended to complement the recent investment in the activation of Eden Dock to provide leisure, recreation and engagement with the natural environment. They will also contribute to the demand for accessible, high quality leisure options in the area, reinforcing Canary Wharf’s broader transformation into a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood. The proposals would see the space open in June 2026.

Proposals for Sea Lanes Canary Wharf

The site for Sea Lanes is located at Eden Dock, with access from Westferry Road, north of Newfoundland. We intend to submit a planning application to Tower Hamlets Council in the coming weeks for a temporary change of use.
The proposals comprise the following elements:
  • A 50 metre by 12 metre, six-lane swimming pool with 1.35 metre depth set within the dock with year-round lifeguarded access
  • Back of house facilities including changing rooms, sauna with glazed views, toilets, kitchen and storage in modular structures
  • Front of house services including central plaza with timber structures, covered walkways, and 10 metre diameter multi-functional clubhouse dome for community events
  • Visitor amenities including food and beverage with covered dome seating and pop-up units, plus viewing deck
  • Restaurant and café area for approximately 150 covers
  • Sustainable features including 54 cycle spaces, floating plant beds, solar panels, and no single-use plastic policy

The modular structures are designed for deconstruction and reuse, preserving the Grade I listed banana wall. Sea Lanes will operate pay-as-you-go, offering inclusive leisure and wellbeing activities. This comprehensive development will enhance Canary Wharf’s reputation as a vibrant mixed-use destination
