Fresh from the Fringe: Pitch-black Audio Theatre Production Makes its Collective Debut at Canary Wharf

Unique British theatre concept – DARKFIELD – where all shows take place in shipping containers in total darkness, will be bringing its latest enigmatic production, COMA, to Canary Wharf this September – direct from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

This is the first time ever that all three shows – COMA, SÉANCE and FLIGHT – will be available to experience in one location.

Arriving in the capital after completing a third consecutive run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the concept uses binaural 360 degree sound to immerse audiences into scenarios played out through headphones.

Provoking every emotion possible, from suggestion and confusion, to total uncertainty, DARKFIELD harnesses the relationship between sound and production – designed to transport visitors beyond the realms of reality.

With audiences of under 30 people, and the absence of any visuals, the resulting feeling is one of profound immediacy and intimacy.

COMA: The newest of Darkfield’’s concepts, Coma debuted at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2019 to much critical acclaim.  The concept invites audiences to take part in a mass experiment, to lie down together and slip into a collective dream, for 30 minutes.

Distorting the barriers between being awake and asleep, visitors are counted down into a deep coma and are confronted with the darkest elements of the mind. The only solution on offer is a placebo, and a promise.

SÉANCE: For 20 minutes, a 24ft container is transformed into a Victorian séance room, transporting visitors back to Queen Victoria’s reign of the early 19th century.  The intense experience explores the psychology of a group of people who have been bombarded with suggestible material.

Challenging visitors’ perceptions of reality, this manipulative environment then quizzes participants on their beliefs of what has occurred, and what is still to be conjured up.

FLIGHT: Flight takes visitors to 35,000ft and immediately starts to unsettle passengers by making the uncomfortable thoughts of flying more prominent.  This disconcerting experience resembles an Airbus A320 economy cabin, condensed into a 40ft container.

Choices need to be made, as the flight takes the audience on a disconcerting journey of peril, presenting two parallel worlds and two realities – with two possible outcomes.

Lucie Moore, Head of Arts and Events, Canary Wharf Group says: “DARKFIELD is a truly unique experience. Unsettling, thought-provoking and exhilarating, it heightens every emotion imaginable, leaving you with a different perspective on everything from the moment you leave. We’re proud to be giving the company a home at Canary Wharf to host all three concepts for the very first time, and to give Londoners the opportunity to test the realms of their mind.”

The innovative theatre company has welcomed over 100,000 audience members worldwide across all three experiences, all of which can now be seen together at Canary Wharf, in a global first.
