Canary Wharf Group Wins Waste Management and Resource Efficiency Award at Edie’s 2019 Sustainability Leaders Awards

Canary Wharf Group is delighted to have won the Waste Management and Resource Efficiency Award at Edie’s 2019 Sustainability Leaders Awards. The award is a significant acknowledgement of the Groups’s #MakingSustainabilityReal campaign, launched in 2018 as an ongoing commitment to becoming the world’s first Plastic-Free Commercial Centre.

The award, announced at a ceremony last week, recognises those that have achieved significant, tangible reductions in waste to landfill and are helping to advance the circular economy through resource efficiency and stakeholder engagement.  Canary Wharf Group joins PepsiCo, MerchantCantos, Ikea, ScottishPower, Heathrow Airport and Adnams as sustainability trailblazers.

The judges said “Operating outside of its core business remit, Canary Wharf Group has clearly influenced other organisations to drive resource efficiency, and the judges were pleased to see the organisations developing such an innovative set of resource efficiency projects which will deliver significant savings.”

The award win follows the Group’s inclusion as one of the highest voted inspirational businesses driving sustainability forward in Edie’s Business Leadership Survey 2019 this week, and also recipients of ‘Outstanding Contribution to Sustainable Development – United Kingdom’ in Capital Finance International Sustainability Awards 2018.

Canary Wharf Group has made major progress in encouraging widespread reuse and recycling across its Canary Wharf estate with their unique waste management processes which support their zero-landfill commitment.  Making Sustainability Real has become a key delivery tool in implementing the Group’s objectives, and is delivered by Veris, Canary Wharf Group’s sustainability partner. A key element in ensuring maximum efficiency is Veris’ close relationship with Cawleys, who are the Group’s waste management and recycling partner.

The award winning Canary Wharf Group campaign includes:

  • Back of house operation – Includes waste sorting tables ensuring every bag of waste on the Canary Wharf estate is sorted, maximising recovery and minimising contamination. Clear and simple signage in service yards encourages waste segregation by retail tenants.
  • Retailer engagement – Every retailer on the Estate is provided with an MSR pack, and an engagement team carry out visits every month.
  • Innovations – Implementation of a unique coffee cup recycling initiative across the Estate, installation of the UK’s first public-facing Deposit Return vending machine and launch of the HELPFUL app, in partnership with HELPFUL. This will aid the 150,000 people who visit and work on the Estate to correctly recycle waste, switch to reusable products and collect rewards.
  • Stakeholder engagement – campaigns have included stakeholder engagement via surveys, and public-facing events

About Canary Wharf’s ‘Plastic Free Community’ commitment:

Canary Wharf Group have committed to use the Plastic Free Communities framework from Surfers Against Sewage as a guide to inform and unite businesses and consumers, in driving down the use of avoidable single-use plastics across the Canary Wharf Estate and offering sustainable alternatives where possible.
