Canary Wharf Group Celebrates Purim on the Estate
Canary Wharf Group celebrates the Jewish festival of Purim at the magnificent East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf on 27th February, with about 400 guests expected to enjoy the entertainment throughout the day.
A wide range of local community groups, including elderly residents, are also expected to attend the celebrations, with school children joining to help at the event. Some will arrive in vibrant colours and fancy dress, as is a tradition of the festival, which will also feature live music, a delicious buffet lunch, mincha and speeches. Employees working for the various companies across the Canary Wharf estate have also been invited to join in the festivities.
In addition to the event, Canary Wharf Group has arranged for gift packages of food to be delivered to community groups, distributed by school children.
Elderly residents from the Dennis Centre, Nightingale House, Rubens House, Holocaust Centre, Redbridge, Lady Sarah Cohen House, Schonfeld Square and The East London Orthodox Synagogues Association will be attending. Members of Stepney Day Centre will be transported to the event, thanks to sponsorship from the Canary Wharf Group.
Danny Seliger, Canary Wharf Group commented: “The celebration of Purim at Canary Wharf is part of our tradition of celebrating a range of religious festivals. Purim is a great opportunity to continue our relationship with local community groups.”
Purim is told in the Book of Esther which is read from a scroll called Megillah. It tells the story of an evil man called Haman who tried to destroy the Jews of the Persian Empire. Customs include eating hamantaschen; small pastries filled with poppy seeds and sending gifts of food to those in need.
