Canary Wharf Group is fully committed to ensuring the Health, Safety and Welfare of its employees, contractors, tenants, visitors and any other persons who may be affected by its actions or activities at all times. The organisation endeavours to ensure that suitable processes are in place to minimise risks to the lowest level practicable. Canary Wharf Management (CWM) subscribes to the belief that all accidents and incidents are preventable, and are working towards the aspirational target of zero reportable accidents and incidents across the Estate.
Canary Wharf Group firmly believes that Health and Safety is integral to the organisation and as such, is committed to promoting a proactive safety culture throughout the business. We will ensure that appropriate resources are provided for the effective implementation of the Canary Wharf Group Safety Management System and that suitably qualified and competent persons are appointed to support the achievement of this.
Canary Wharf Group recognises that strong Health & Safety performance is good business sense and makes for a positive business investment and the implementation of safety standards throughout the organisation will be led from the very top of the Executive Team. In line with this Senior Management ownership of health and safety, all employees are expected to follow the processes and procedures that have been agreed and implemented by Canary Wharf Group.
How Safety is Implemented
Canary Wharf Group holds the international quality standard (ISO 9001:2008) and the British Standard on safety management systems (BS OHSAS 18001:2007). These standards are integrated with the Environmental Management standard (ISO 14001:2004) to form an Integrated Management System which ensures that all parts of the business are focused on continual improvement.
Canary Wharf Management has prepared an Estate Handbook, Retail Tenant Guide, Contractor Handbook and Tenant Fit-Out Guide which each set out the safety standards applicable to all of our tenants and visitors. All contractors engaged to work for Canary Wharf Management are required to be registered to the “SafeContractors” scheme and to follow the processes outlined within the Contractor Handbook.
Communication is a vital component of safety management and we work with our staff, tenants and contractors to ensure safety information is provided in a timely and effective manner. We hold tenant safety forums throughout the year with the aim to encourage closer collaboration with our tenants and retailers on health, safety and welfare related issues. Canary Wharf Management also holds regular Staff Consultative Committee meetings which are an opportunity for our employees to raise safety matters directly with our Company Secretary and the Fire, Safety & Environment Manager.
Canary Wharf continues to maintain a low accident frequency rate (AFR) and performs consistently above other relevant sectors. We work closely with our colleagues at Tower Hamlets council and the London Fire Brigade to ensure that we continue to manage safety in a proactive manner.
We have been awarded the RoSPA Gold Medal Award for 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014 and the British Safety Council International Award in 2019 and 2016.
