At Canary Wharf Management (CWM) we believe healthy, well informed and resourced employees are motivated and engaged to deliver an excellent service to all of our stakeholders, throughout all of our businesses.
Canary Wharf Group is committed to providing and maintaining safe systems of work and safe environments wherever we undertake our business activities.
To encourage good compliance with our health and safety aims and objectives, health and safety is built into all company and departmental objectives – from Arts & Events to Security.
Supporting Our Community
Canary Wharf Management work alongside our tenants and the local community to create a unique place where safety is a key focus of our activities.
Starting at the top, Canary Wharf Group holds the international quality standard (ISO 9001:2008) and the British Standard on safety management systems (BS OHSAS 18001:2007). These standards are integrated with the environmental Management standard (ISO 14001:2004) and ensure that all parts of the business are focused on continual improvement.
Canary Wharf is a busy, complex estate with 37 iconic buildings, 300 retail spaces and a working population of 112 000 people. Canary Wharf Management recognise that all of our tenants work side by side and have an impact on each other. CWM Fire, Safety & Environment team support our existing and new tenants by providing advice, support and training on all safety and environment matters.
Canary Wharf Management has prepared the Estate Handbook, Retail Tenant Guide and Corporate Tenant Guide – which sets out the safety standards applicable to all of our tenants and visitors. Please ask your building management team for a copy if you have questions.
We also help build links within the local safety professional community for our corporate tenants including coordinating and chairing a lively, informative and stimulating programme of Tenant Safety Forums. All corporate safety persons working on the Estate are invited to join. If you are interested please contact safety@CanaryWharf.com to be added to the distribution list.
Retail tenants are invited to the bi-annual Retail Safety Forum. The Retail Safety Forum is an opportunity for our retailers to ask questions and receive information on safety performance on the estate including the Retail Fire Safety Checks – which help to confirm that our businesses are prepared in the event of emergency situations.
We are an active partner of the Defibrillator Accreditation Scheme run by the London Ambulance Service. This raises awareness of defibrillators and access to them for tenants and visitors, leading to an increased chance of a casualty surviving. To access a defibrillator please ask a passing Security Officer – who will know where these are located and be familiar with their use.
Supporting Our Business
Canary Wharf Management has partnered with around 300 contractors to provide a variety of services to our community – covering everything from Arts & Events to Security provision. We ensure that they are competent to carry out work by asking all contractors to achieve Accreditation with the SafeContractors scheme. Exceptions to this requirement are only given to those contractors who can demonstrate that they will have no material effect on the our employees, visitors, tenants or physical aspects of the estate.
Canary Wharf Management holds regular Staff Consultative Committee meetings. These meetings are an opportunity for our employees to raise safety matters directly with our Company Secretary and the Fire, Safety & Environment Manager.
The Canary Wharf Management Safety Representative system helps to support the safety management systems with regular safety walks, toolbox talks and meetings to discuss new arrangements within the business.
Accident rates for our employees and visitors are significantly below other relevant sectors and the accident frequency rate has decreased each year for the last ten years. We have achieved this through an active system of monitoring and reviewing the outcomes of all accident investigation to identify ways to further reduce employee and public injuries on the Estate.
Canary Wharf Management is committed to addressing the hazards that vulnerable road users face in London. In 2016 we chose the Freight Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS). FORS is a London wide scheme set up to help guide companies to set up cycle safe driver training and vehicle selection and maintenance. In August 2016 we successfully achieved the Bronze Level of the Freight Operator Recognition Scheme.
