Open Doors: Get Into Construction at Canary Wharf – 04.02.20

This March Canary Wharf Group’s construction arm, Canary Wharf Contractors will once again take part in Open Doors, a unique opportunity for the public to see behind the scenes at major live construction sites.

The visits offer a chance for guests to not only gain an insight into the projects but to learn more about the construction industry, the diverse range of skills and professions needed in the industry and associated career paths by speaking with the project teams.

Two iconic London projects, the Newfoundland building and the Wood Wharf development, will be taking part in the programme; with Newfoundland hosting a visit on Thursday 19 March 2.30 – 4.30pm and Wood Wharf hosting a visit on Saturday 21 March 10am – 12noon and another at 1 – 3pm.

Newfoundland, which sees its first residents move in this summer, is a striking new addition to Canary Wharf skyline. A residential tower, compromising of 636 apartments arranged over f 58 floors and located at the western end of the Canary Wharf estate.  Designed by renowned architects Horden Cherry and structural engineers WSP, Newfoundland’s striking appearance stems from its transparent diagrid structure, also notably used in another famous London landmark, “The Gherkin”.

Wood Wharf, Canary Wharf’s new district, has been designed to provide a new residential led, mixed use, waterside community defined by the quality of its public spaces, the diversity of its land uses and activities, and its exemplary architecture.  Stretched over 23 acres, the masterplan, designed by Allies and Morrison Architects, creates a strong and complementary mix of uses, providing up to 3,600 new homes, nearly 2 million sq. ft. of high-quality commercial office space, and a further 350,000 sq. ft. of shops, restaurants and community uses.
