Weightlifter Crowned Canary Wharf Sports Personality of the Year
Canary Wharf Group is delighted to announce that 18-year old Mercy Brown has been awarded this year’s Canary Wharf Sports Personality of the Year for her impressive weight-lifting achievements.
At a ceremony at Canary Wharf’s East Wintergarden last night, amid fierce competition from an impressive array of nominees, Mercy was named Canary Wharf Sports Personality of the Year. Three local sporting groups were also given awards for their 2014 achievements. These were ice skaters Team Phoenix, The London Disability Swimming Club and the Bangladesh Football Association.
Mercy represented England in the Commonwealth Games last summer, and finished third at the European Youth Championships where she gained a bronze medal in the clean and jerk and totals. She was placed 19th at the Senior World Championships against much older and more experienced competitors.
In November Mercy broke three British Records at the IWC Senior World Championships in snatch, clean and jerk and overall, in not only her under–20 category but also the under–23 and seniors categories for 75kg and +75kg of weight. Mercy is the proud holder of 30 national records and she is on the UKSport World Class Potential Programme. She is aiming for the Olympics in Rio in 2016.

This is the fourteenth annual Canary Wharf Sports Awards. Canary Wharf Group is proud to have invested in sport in the surrounding area of London for over 20 years as part of its commitment to fostering social and economic development.
The awards encourage sporting excellence and participation in this area of London. The event was attended by over 300 local sports people and administrators as well as a range of local dignitaries, including Tower Hamlets Speaker of the Council Abdul Mukit MBE; Deputy Mayor, Councillor Oliur Rahman; Managing Director of Dagenham & Redbridge FC, Stephen Thompson MBE and Ex Liverpool and Aston Villa striker Dean Saunders.
Winners on the evening were:
- Sports Personality of the Year: Mercy Brown,
Mercy is now the British Champion at Weightlifting in her category and competed in the Commonwealth Games for England in 2014, she is the British Record holder for her weight category and the category below in the Clean and Jerk, Snatch and Combined. Other competition highlights include finishing 3rd at the European Junior Championships, gaining a bronze medal in the clean and jerk and totals; finishing 6th at the World Junior Championships and finishing 19th at the Senior World Championships against competitors much older and more experienced than her.Weightlifting
- Junior Team of the Year: Team Phoenix
Team Phoenix is a junior synchronised ice skating team. In 2014 they ranked 3rd in Great Britain and are determined to beat their ranking this year. Their competitive season kicked off in September at the Lee Valley London Region Open where the team showed their impressive skills, coming 1st and achieving scores that were significantly higher than the 2nd place team. In November they competed again in the Wales & West Synchronised competition, achieving gold.
- Senior Team of the Year: London Disability Swimming Club
Every member of this club has a disability and takes part in 4-20 hours of swimming training a week. Over 20 swimmers competed at the British Paraswimming International 2014, British Gas Short Course disability championships 2014, and the National age groups. Three swimmers were selected to compete in Eindhoven 2014 European Championships of which two were awarded multiple gold medals.
- Group Achievement Award: Bangladesh Football Association
Bangladesh Football Association (BFA) delivers 11 different sports projects and engages over 3000 people, bringing social and community benefits. As well as sports projects, the group also delivered an FA Level 1 and FA Referee coaching course to train the next generation of coaches and referees for the game. It has given many local young people the opportunity to move into paid employment.
