Sukkot Celebrations at Canary Wharf
Between Wednesday 26 and Friday 28 September, Canary Wharf will be hosting two buffet luncheons for members of the local Jewish community in celebration of the Jewish festival of Sukkot. Created especially for the festival, the luncheon and festivities will take place at the “Sukkah” or Tabernacle outside of the Clifford Chance building, in the heart of the Canary Wharf estate.
Specially designed and constructed for the festival every year, the “Sukkah” features a striking wooden lattice exterior with an intimate interior dining area. The biblical structure is intended to be reminiscent of the fragile dwellings that the Israelites used during the 40 years they wandered in the desert, showcasing their dependence on temporary shelter and protection from God.
The Sukkah will play host to three lunches throughout the festivities, sponsored by Canary Wharf Group, BGC Partners, EY Jewish Network and KPMG Jewish Society. Clifford Chance, whose offices overlook the Sukkah, will provide a tea for their staff on Wednesday 26th, alongside sponsoring the refreshments for the EY and KPMG event.
Canary Wharf Group’s Danny Seliger said, “As part of Canary Wharf Group’s on going dedication to supporting the Jewish faith, we always look forward to celebrating the festivities on the Estate. We are excited to host the series of luncheons and reunite with members of Stepney Jewish Community Centre, Holocaust Survivors Centre and Nightingale House.”
The festival of Sukkot is a biblical Jewish holiday which reflects on the shelter the Israelites took in the desert. Throughout Sukkot, traditionally meals are eaten inside the Sukkah; it is an important time for reflection and is one of the major events in the Jewish calendar.
