It’s time for Sukkot at Canary Wharf
Canary Wharf Group will be hosting buffet luncheons for members of the local Jewish community in celebration of the Jewish festival of Sukkot, from 30th September to 2nd October. These will take place at the ‘Sukkah’ or Tabernacle, specially constructed for the duration of the festival in the heart of the Canary Wharf Estate, in Montgomery Square.
Designed specifically for the setting by architects Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, the Sukkah will have a striking exterior with wooden latticing and an intimate interior dining area. The structure is intended to be reminiscent of the fragile dwellings which the Israelites used during the forty years they wandered in the desert, depending on temporary shelter and protection from God.
The Sukkah will bring together London’s Jewish community during this important celebration in the Jewish calendar, within a unique setting. The Sukkah will host three lunches. These will be sponsored by BGC Partners, Canary Wharf Group and KPMG respectively. Clifford Chance will host a tea for some of their employees.
Danny Seliger, Canary Wharf Group, said “We have always been dedicated in supporting the Jewish faith, but more importantly the opportunity to welcome members of the local community to join in with the celebrations. We look forward to welcoming Stepney Jewish Community Centre, Brenner Community Centre, Rubens House, Holocaust Survivors Centre, Bikur Cholim, Redbridge Jewish Community Centre and Members of East London Synagogues, to the Sukkah this year.”
The festival of Sukkot is a biblical Jewish holiday which reflects on the shelter of the Israelites in the desert. Throughout Sukkot, meals are traditionally eaten inside the Sukkah. It is an important time for reflection and one of the major events in the Jewish calendar.
