Ice Rink Canary Wharf Gets the Seal of Approval
This year, Ice Rink Canary Wharf is celebrating one of the area’s most famous residents, Sammy the Seal. Sammy, as he is affectionately known to the locals, lives in the docks at Canary Wharf and is often found breakfasting on fresh fish, courtesy of the porters at nearby Billingsgate Market. Visitors to the ice rink this year are invited to try out the world’s first ‘Sealfie’ wall, an interactive board that transforms skaters into Sammy the Seal, and share their pictures using the ‘#sealfie’.
Canary Wharf has also introduced seals to the ice, with child-friendly seal skate aids new for 2015. To mark the opening, five school children dressed in Sammy the Seal onesies took to the ice and were the first to use the new skate aids.
Designed with a difference, Ice Rink Canary Wharf features London’s only skate path, a passage weaving through the fairy-lit trees of Canada Square Park. The rink and skate path combined comprise almost 1,100m2 of ice, making Ice Rink Canary Wharf one of the largest outdoor rinks in the capital.
A festive favourite, this stunning ice rink will once again provide a breath-taking illuminated backdrop for Canary Wharf’s visitors to skate along to their favourite Christmas tunes amidst the spectacular vista of twinkling lights and decorations. This ice rink is the perfect venue for a romantic date, a family day out or to have a fun with friends.
The Tasting Room will offer indulgent winter warmers, including hot buttered rum, mulled wine and cider, as well as a wide selection of craft ales and new and old world wines. For après skate, there is a selection of cheese fondue, artisan cheese boards and charcuterie, and a flexible dining space of up to 200 people available for private hire.
Opening in good time to welcome Christmas parties and festive celebrations, the rink welcomes groups, families and children aged four and above, with doors opening every day except Christmas Day.
Ajay Teli, Head of Strategic Consumer Communications, Canary Wharf Group said: “We hope visitors enjoy the world’s first ’sealfie’ inspired by one of our most well-loved and playful residents. Children of all ages can make the most of the ice rink thanks to our Sammy-shaped skate aids. We are encouraging shoppers and skaters to keep an eye out for the real Sammy this winter, who are hoping will make an appearance.”
A truly spectacular venue and one of East London’s biggest winter attractions, Ice Rink Canary Wharf is the only place to skate this winter.
