Community to Celebrate Shavuot at Canary Wharf

??London’s Jewish community will head to Canary Wharf on 9 May to celebrate the festival of Shavuot, thanks to a function hosted by international law firm Clifford Chance LLP and Canary Wharf Group plc.

Over 150 representatives of groups such as Stepney Jewish Community Day Centre, Dennis Centre, Brenner Centre, Nightingale House, The Holocaust Centre, Rubens House, Schonfeld Square Care Home and East London Synagogues are expected to attend, along with employees from Canary Wharf and City-based companies. The function will be held in Clifford Chance’s Canary Wharf offices in 10 Upper Bank Street at 12:30pm on 9 May.

A choir from Menorah Primary School will perform at the event, which also includes a buffet lunch. Later in the week, gifts of packages of food will be distributed to elderly people by primary school children.

Canary Wharf Group is providing buses to transport elderly members from Stepney Jewish Centre and children from the Menorah Primary School to the event.

Danny Seliger from Canary Wharf Group plc said: “We are proud to have supported this special annual event for several years. It is one of the highlights on the Jewish calendar, and a great opportunity for people young and old to come together at Canary Wharf. It is part of Canary Wharf Group’s year-round commitment to helping local community groups of different faiths. We would especially like to thank Clifford Chance for their continued support.”

Adrian Cohen, a partner of Clifford Chance LLP, said “We have been hosting this event for a number of years alongside Canary Wharf Group PLC and various local care agencies. It provides us with a wonderful opportunity to provide hospitality to people working in Canary Wharf together with some of the older residents of the wider community and enjoy the festivities around the holiday of Shavuot.”

Shavuot (also known as Shavuos), the Jewish festival of weeks, marks the giving of the Ten Commandments by God to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai. Customs include decorating homes and synagogues with fruit and flowers and eating dairy food such as cheesecake. This year, the festival begins on the evening of Tuesday 14th May and ends on the evening of Thursday 16th May.
