Canary Wharf prepares for arrival of Britain’s best cyclists

Ten of Britain’s leading teams to race through Canary Wharf on Thursday evening

The Halfords Tour Series races into Canary Wharf on Thursday, for Round Seven of Britain’s leading televised cycle race Series. Among the competitors will be Olympic Gold medallist Ed Clancy and former Team Sky rider Russ Downing, who will be among the 50 strong field battling it out over an hour of racing on the one kilometre Canary Wharf circuit.

Heading in to Round Seven, Scotland’s Endura Racing lead the way, although their lead is narrowing after wins in Aberystwyth and Peterborough for Team UK Youth and Team Raleigh – GAC have closed the gap at the top.

Team Raleigh – GAC took the honours in Peterborough on Tuesday night, their first ever Halfords Tour Series win, while Olympian Ed Clancy took the individual honours for Rapha Condor Sharp. “It’s been a tough Halfords Tour Series for the team so far,” said Clancy, who is on course to represent Great
Britain in the Team Pursuit at the London Olympics. “It’s a team event so as nice as it is to win the individual we’re trying to win the team.”

Looking ahead to Canary Wharf and the opportunity to compete in London just under two months before the Olympic Games, Clancy is hopefully for another successful evening. “To be honest it should be the sort of circuit that suits me but I’ve never really had much luck around there
and gone well, but who knows, it’d be nice to go for a double.”

Johnny McEvoy is one of the riders who has helped Endura Racing into the lead of the Series following Round Six in Peterborough, with the St Helens’ rider winning last year’s event in Canary Wharf. “After a really successful and exciting round of The Halfords Tour Series in 2011 at Canary Wharf, I am
looking forward to returning with my new Endura Racing team to try win again. The atmosphere and great surroundings make for a brilliant race.”

Taking place shortly before the professional race at 7pm will be the Canary Wharf Corporate Grand Prix ProAm relay, partnering some of Canary Wharf’s most famous names, including Thomson Reuters, Clifford
Chance and the Reebok Club, as well as teams from Halfords Tour Series partners IG Markets and SKODA, with riders from each of the ten Halfords Tour Series’ professional teams. Jason White of the Metaltek Scott team led Thomson Reuters to victory in last year’s Canary Wharf Corporate Grand Prix, and is looking forward to the Series’ return to the venue.
“The atmosphere at Canary Wharf is unreal, it seems everyone in the City becomes a cycling fan for the day, the circuit with the high rise buildings creates a real presence like a cycling amphitheatre. Last year I was the
chosen anchorman for the corporate challenge. The Guys and Girls taking part are so competitive too, they really take it seriously.”

The Corporate Grand Prix gets underway at 6pm, with Round Seven of The Halfords Tour Series starting at 7pm. Highlights of the Canary Wharf race will be shown on ITV4 at 8pm on Friday 1st June.
