Job Summary:

The Director – People & Development leads and is responsible for managing the People & Development Team, which comprises the Human Resources and Learning and Development groups. The role requires a strategic, generalist and commercial individual who can support and deliver corporate objectives and be a champion of the Company’s culture in accordance with best practice.

Main Responsibilities

Management of the People & Development Department

  • Leads, develops and supports the People & Development Team.

Recruitment and Selection

  • Responsible for Recruitment and Selection policy and procedures. 
  • Develops initiatives which promote the Company brand as an employer of choice.
  • Provides recruitment and selection services.
  • Develops the Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Strategy and supports initiatives to promote a diverse workforce attracting the best talent.
  • Ensures that the recruitment processes and HR policies and reporting metrics are aligned to the Company’s ESG objectives.

Employee Relations

  • Promotes core values of collaboration, excellence, innovation, engagement and ownership throughout the organisation.
  • Advises managers on employee relations, maintaining knowledge of industry trends, good practice and employment legislation.
  • Determines and recommends employee relations practices necessary to establish a positive and balanced employer-employee relationship.
  • Maintains the Employee Handbook and the development of policies to reflect procedural and legal changes.
  • Directs the preparation of information required for compliance with laws or audits.
  • Manages complex employee relations casework including disciplinaries, grievances, absence and redundancy.
  • Conducts hearings and investigations as required.

Employee Engagement & Communications

  • Responsible for engagement surveys including “Employee Voice 24/7” and responds to issues raised via the confidential hotline.
  • Embeds company values in People & Development Team, HR policies, initiatives and practices.
  • Supports D&I /ESG Steering Groups.
  • Assists with Employee Calls and is responsible for the Staff Consultative Committee and any other consultation processes which are needed to promote a culture of employee engagement. 

Training and Development

  • Guides and supports the Learning and Development Manager with training strategy and implementation of training needs.
  • Responsible for the annual appraisal system and the performance management system.
  • Assists with the delivery of in-house courses.


  • Maintains external benchmarking remuneration data, which includes participation in salary surveys and advice re compensation recommendations.
  • Works with appropriate parties on reward strategy.
  • Assists with Company End of Year Remuneration Review preparing data for the Board and Remcom.
  • Responsible for producing Company Gender and Ethnicity Pay Gap Reports.

Benefits & Welfare

  • Responsible for reviewing benefits package to ensure it is competitive and relevant.
  • Responsible for employee welfare and wellness, e.g. including overseeing the provision of Occupational Health, supporting managers with health and attendance issues, and provision of other medical tests.

Organisation Development

  • Translates the strategic and tactical business plans into HR strategic and operational plans that support the business to achieve its objectives.
  • Assists with Organisational Development issues including succession planning, co-ordinating redundancy exercises, TUPE situations and reorganisations.


  • Provides management information and staffing statistics to track strategic goal accomplishment.
  • Translates key data into effective and commercially focused people strategies.
  • Manages HR systems including sharing responsibility for the HR elements of the database “Workday”.
  • Liaise closely with the CSR Team to develop business links with education/ training agencies in order to support the Company’s commitment to enhancing its profile within local stakeholders.

What We Require of You

  • Must have experience of managing and developing a People and Development function.
  • Must have a proven and detailed knowledge of HR practice including employment law, recruitment, training and development, employee engagement, compensation and benefits.
  • Must have a leadership approach which is collaborative and fosters engagement.
  • Must be CIPD qualified.
  • Must have commercial acumen and ability to deliver commercially focused people strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential with the ability to directly influence practice and build effective and collaborative partnerships at all levels.
  • Must be able to practice a high level of confidentiality.
  • Must be able to innovate and embrace change.
  • Excellent organisation skills and ability to prioritise are essential.
  • Experience of working in a customer service driven industry, real estate and construction would be desirable.
  • Experience of using “Workday” would be advantageous.
