Senior Sustainability Manager – 9 month Fixed Term Contract

Job Summary: To lead Canary Wharf Contractorsl Ltd’s (CWCL) project delivery of the Canary Wharf Group (CWG) sustainability strategy

Responsible for the ownership and implementation of CWC Sustainable Design and Construction strategy and will focus on working with all design teams to agree and implement high Sustainability performance targets for the projects in the company’s pipeline.

As the expert reference for CWC design teams, a high level of knowledge and awareness through external benchmarking required to be maintained, networking and sustainability trends scanning, sharing that knowledge and guiding teams to maximise opportunities.

The role will be best suited to an experienced professional with strong programme and project management experience. Strong knowledge of building physics principles, including thermal building performance, WELL Assessments and wider sustainability is also required.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Lead on deliverables for the CRG and attend the CRG meetings.
  2. Lead on continuous development, update and delivery of the long term Sustainable Design and Construction Strategy for the Group.
  3. Manage project deliverables, budgets, consultant appointments and se design briefs and targets across a number of projects and over the project lifespan.
  4. Manage all Environmental Assessment Methods (EAM) such as BREEAM, CfSH, HQM and LEED. Monitoring targeted credits on an ongoing basis to ensure that scores are maximised.
  5. Lead on all Health and Wellbeing and Biodiversity targets for the estate design and construction.
  6. Lead and manage the GRESB reporting process.
  7. Support bid and tender works for any new projects nationally and internationally.
  8. Verify project designs to ensure they are in accordance with sustainability targets and assess budget constraints.
  9. Prepare and/or review technical reports (e.g. Climate Change Resilience, Functional Adaptability, Materials Efficiency, Project Briefs).
  10. Procure and manage teams of consultants delivering sustainability, environment and wellbeing, ISO20400 deliverables.
  11. Assist design teams with expert knowledge around key aspects of building performance and sustainability (Energy, Wellbeing, Biodiversity, etc).
  12. Support all CWG Projects in overall delivery of CWG Sustainability Strategy.
  13. Develop and deliver engagement, communication and training activities and mentor junior staff.
  14. Monitor and report environmental KPI Data related with the implementation and delivery of the CWG Sustainable Design and Construction strategy, assisting the delivery of long term sustainability targets.
  15. Participate in design team meetings and all sustainability related meetings to ensure that all team members clearly understand the sustainability requirements of the project and are aware of their specific environmental responsibilities and deliverables with relation to their scope of works.
  16. Develop and maintain relationships with key Canary Wharf Group internal and external stakeholders and peers. Liaise with the Project and Design Executives and Managers to ensure sustainability targets are established, maintained and up to date.
  17. Carry out review and comment on Consultants Pre-Qualification, Tender and Environmental Plan submissions, making recommendations where required, to ensure the requirements of the CWC EMS and CWG Sustainability Strategy are met.
  18. Mentor and train junior staff and oversee team resourcing.

Working Relationships:

  1. Works closely with all CWG Sustainability Team (CWG, CWM, CWC Sustainability Construction team) to update and maintain sustainability targets and daily team operations management.
  2. Assists Design Executives and Design Managers in the delivery and implementation of the Sustainable Design and Construction Strategy targets and project specific sustainability targets.
  3. Works closely with the Project Teams to ensure the implementation of Environmental Management Systems, procedures, plans and reporting of KPIs.
  4. Works with the industry and partners to enhance the role of CWG as thought leaders in the sustainability arena.
  5. Take part and work in various industry memberships and working groups including UKGBC, BBP, Supply chain school etc. representing CWG in the wider industry.

Health Safety and Welfare Responsibilities

Environmental Responsibilities
All Staff are required to follow the Canary Wharf Group plc (CWG) Environmental Policies for minimisation of waste and effective energy management as defined in the CWG Environmental Manual and associated documents.

Quality Management Responsibilities
All staff are required to comply with CWG Quality Management System requirements detailed within the Company Quality Manual & Policies, and to ensure that all Procedure; Plans and Forms within InfoBase are effectively implemented to meet the set ISO 9001 Quality Management Standard.

Person Specification
  1. Must possess a relevant degree in a relevant scientific discipline such as Architecture/Engineering/ Environmental Management/Environmental Science (or similar).
  2. The role demands credibility and proven project management experience, gained from implementation of similar programmes or projects.
  3. Broad knowledge of building performance aspects, including energy modeling and energy efficiency, building design related regulations, biodiversity, wellbeing, etc.
  4. First-hand experience with fast-track design and construction projects is essential as is a proven background of having achieved industry leading results within a sustainable built environment role i.e. involvement on projects which have achieved a high standard or BREEAM / LEED / Code for Sustainable Homes.
  5. A working knowledge of BREEAM, CSH, HQM, WELL, LEED and other EAMs, Sustainability KPIs, Considerate Constructors Scheme, ISO 14001 compliant EMS, is essential.
  6. Preference will be given to candidates with accredited professional credentials (BREEAM AP, WELL AP, CEnv, IEMA membership, other).
  7. The ability to develop and implement management systems and change related processes and procedures when required is essential.
  8. The role requires an individual who is self-motivated and tenacious. The ability to work well as part of an integrated Canary Wharf Project Team with Consultants, Trade Contractors and others associated with the Sustainability and Environmental Department is absolutely vital in this position.
  9. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, especially when dealing with Trade Contractors, Consultants, Tenants, Statutory Authorities, and other external Interested Parties.
  10. The ability to make commercially aware decisions is essential.
  11. Good organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at once.
  12. A positive and helpful customer service orientation is essential.
  13. This role will demand critical attention to detail. The ability to motivate others to meet co-ordination deadlines in a diplomatic manner, while maintaining relationships will be essential.
  14. The role demands experience of managing and mentoring junior team members.
  15. Commitment to continuous improvement and continuing professional development is an important aspect of this position.
  16. IT literacy and good IT working skills (using Document Management Systems Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and databases) are essential.
