Senior Sustainability Manager

Job Summary: To lead Canary Wharf Contractorsl Ltd’s (CWCL) project delivery of the Canary Wharf Group (CWG) sustainability strategy

Responsible for leading and delivering sustainability though all project developments with focus on working with all project teams to agree and implement high sustainability performance targets for projects in the company’s pipeline.

As the sustainable construction expert reference for CWCL project teams, a high level of knowledge and awareness through external benchmarking required to be maintained, through networking and sustainability trends scanning, sharing that knowledge and guiding teams to maximise opportunities.

The role will be best suited to an experienced professional with strong programme and project management experience. Strong knowledge of implementation of sustainability programmes is also required.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Contribute to the overall development, update and maintenance of Canary Wharf Contractors Environmental Management System (CWCL EMS) to support delivery of the long term Sustainability Strategy for the Group.
  2. Participate in engagement activity, communication and training as required to enable CWCL Staff, Consultants and Trade Contractors to understand, take responsibility and deliver the relevant requirements of the CWCL EMS and CWG Sustainability Strategy.
  3. Carry out review and approval of CWCL Project Specific Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) including Environmental Risk Register (ERR), Construction Phase Environmental Management Plan (CPEMP) Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP).
  4. Carry out review and comment on Consultants and Trade Contractors Pre-Qualification, Tender and Environmental Plan submissions, making recommendations where required, to ensure the requirements of the CWCL EMS and CWG Sustainability Strategy are met.
  5. Contribute to and maintain company benchmarking submissions in support of overall CWG reporting requirements.
  6. Represent the company and participate in internal and external working groups and forums with the overall objective of improving understanding and delivery of CWG Sustainability Strategy through all our projects.
  7. Line manages junior staff and guides their development.

Project Specific Responsibilities

  1. With the overall goal of maximizing the BREEAM / LEED / CfSH rating for the Project, engage with the CWCL Project Team as necessary to ensure that the CWCL EMS is fully implemented and delivering the required levels of environmental performance.
  2. Manage and monitor Project Sustainability Performance with particular focus on:- BREEAM / General Environmental Protection and Good Practice  / Trade Contractor and Consultant EMPs / FSC Protocol / Sustainable Procurement / Waste Elimination / Environmental KPIs and Reporting.
  3. Liaise with the Project Executive and Unit Environmental Representative (UER) to ensure that the CWCL Project Specific Environmental Management Plans (ERR CPEMP SWMP) are established, maintained and up to date for the Project.
  4. Assist Design and Project Managers to procure, Consultants’ and Trade Contractors’ ensuring that correct environmental content specific to the requirements of the Project is included within the package scope and comment on tender returns.
  5. Participate in package kick-off meetings to ensure that all Project Trade Contractors clearly understand the requirements of the CWCL EMS and are aware of their specific environmental responsibilities and deliverables with relation to their scope of works.
  6. Ensure that Trade Contractors’ Environmental Plans, and Site Waste Management Plans meet the requirements of CWCL EMS and relevant environmental legislation requirements and in conjunction with Env Reps, PMs and CMs are implemented on the Project.
  7. Liaise with UER to ensure that environmental inspections are carried out as described in the CPEMP.
  8. Co-ordinate with UER to ensure that Trade Contractors report monthly environmental KPI data and enter waste management data into the Waste Management database. Collate and report data as necessary where applicable.
  9. Review environmental KPI Data from the Project identifying areas of improvement and assisting the CWCL SM in setting long term sustainability targets.
  10. Ensure that environmental issues in relation to Considerate Constructors Scheme are being implemented to maximize the score.
  11. Report any Environmental Good Practice, Sustainability Opportunities and Environmental Incidents to CWCL SM.
  12. Liaise with relevant interested parties Environment Agency / Planning Authority as necessary to ensure Environmental or Sustainability Project assurances and consents are effectively closed out.
  13. Assist Project Teams and Trade contractors to close out environmental Observations and NCRs which have been raised by CWCL QA department or any external or 3rd Party Audit Body i.e BREEAM Assessor / FSC / BMTRADA / CCS / GRI etc.
  14. Participate in project progress meetings other sustainability related meetings and provide environmental content to project reports as required.

Working Relationships:

  1. Works closely with and reports to the CWG Head of Sustainability.
  2. Works closely with the CWCL Senior Sustainability Programme Manager.
  3. Works closely with and line manages CWCL Sustainability Manager, Coordinator, Administrator.
  4. Works closely with the CWCL Project Executive and Unit Environmental Representative with regard to the implementation of the EMS on the project.
  5. Works closely with Design Managers and Project Managers with regard to the submittal and approval of Consultants’ and Trade Contractors’ Environmental ensure CWCL EMS and BREEAM requirements are met.
  6. Works with Consultants and Trade Contractors where required to ensure that their Environmental Plans, Site Waste Management Plans meet necessary requirements.
  7. Assists Project Managers, Senior Construction Managers and Construction Managers with regard to the supervision and inspection of construction activities in accordance with Trade Contractors’ Environmental Plans, Site Waste Management Plans and CWCL Environmental Procedures.
  8. Works closely with the Project Team to ensure the implementation of Environmental Management Systems, procedures, plans and reporting of KPIs.

Health Safety and Welfare Responsibilities

Environmental Responsibilities
All Staff are required to follow the Canary Wharf Group plc (CWG) Environmental Policies for minimisation of waste and effective energy management as defined in the CWG Environmental Manual and associated documents.

Quality Management Responsibilities
All staff are required to comply with CWG Quality Management System requirements detailed within the Company Quality Manual & Policies, and to ensure that all Procedure; Plans and Forms within InfoBase are effectively implemented to meet the set ISO 9001 Quality Management Standard.

Person Specification
  1. The role demands credibility and presence, gained though proven construction project management experience, from a combination of contracting, construction management or similar sustainability roles.
  2. In depth experience of company-wide sustainability implementation programs is essential.
  3. First-hand experience with fast-track design and construction projects is essential as is a proven background of having achieved industry leading results within a sustainable built environment role i.e. involvement on projects which have achieved a high standard or BREEAM / LEED / Code for Sustainable Homes.
  4. A working knowledge of BRREAM and other EAMs, Sustainability KPIs, Considerate Constructors Scheme, ISO 14001 compliant EMS, is essential.
  5. The ability to develop and implement management systems and change related processes and procedures when required is essential.
  6. The role requires an individual who is self-motivated and tenacious. The ability to work well as part of an integrated Canary Wharf Project Team with Consultants, Trade Contractors and others associated with the Sustainability and Environmental Department is absolutely vital in this position.
  7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, especially when dealing with Trade Contractors, Consultants, Statutory Authorities, Neighbours and other external Interested Parties.
  8. It is essential that the job holder be conscious of, and actively promotes the adherence of Health & Safety Standards and Procedures and be conversant in Health & Safety Issues, as they apply to fast-track high rise construction. The job holder must be competent in assessing and commenting on the adequacy of Method Statements and Risk Assessments.
  9. The ability to make commercially aware decisions is essential.
  10. A positive and helpful attitude and customer service orientation are essential.
  11. This role will demand critical attention to detail. The ability to motivate others to meet co-ordination deadlines in a diplomatic manner, while maintaining relationships will be essential.
  12. The role demands experience of managing deadlines and interfacing with external parties.
  13. Commitment to continuous improvement and continuing professional development is an important aspect of this position.
  14. A technical qualification equivalent to HNC / HND Building Studies as a minimum.
  15. IT literacy and good IT working skills (using Document Management Systems Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and databases) are essential.
