People & Development Director

Job Summary:  The People & Development Director leads the HR team and focuses on empowering employees’ collaboration, excellence, innovation, engagement and ownership in an employee oriented culture.

The role provides a strategic, generalist service to support corporate objectives, and be a champion of the Company’s culture in accordance with best practice.

The People & Development Director is responsible for managing the People & Development Team, which comprises HR, Learning and Development, Customer Experience and the Office Manager/ Chaplaincy Administrator.

Main Responsibilities

Management of the People & Development Department

  • Leads, develops and supports the People & Development Team.

Recruitment and Selection

  • Responsible for Recruitment and Selection policy and procedures.
  • Develop initiatives which promote the Company brand as an employer of choice.
  • Provide recruitment and selection services.
  • Develop the Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Strategy and support initiatives to promote a diverse workforce attracting the best talent.
  • Ensure the recruitment processes are aligned to the Company’s CSR objectives.

Employee Relations

  • Promote core values of collaboration, excellence, innovation, engagement and ownership throughout the organisation.
  • Advise managers on employee relations, maintaining knowledge of industry trends, good practice and employment legislation.
  • Determine and recommend employee relations practices necessary to establish a positive employer-employee relationship.
  • Maintain the Employee Handbook and the development of policies to reflect procedural and legal changes.
  • Member of the GDPR Committee to ensure compliance with GDPR legislation and plays a key role with any DSAR requests.
  • Directs the preparation of information required for compliance with laws or audits.
  • Manage complex employee relations casework including disciplinaries, grievances, absence and redundancy.
  • Conduct hearings and investigations as required.

Employee Engagement & Communications

  • Responsible for engagement surveys including “Employee Voice 24/7” and respond to issues raised via the confidential hotline.
  • Embed company values in HR policies, initiatives and practices.
  • Support D&I Steering Groups.
  • Assist with Employee Calls and responsible for the Staff Consultative Committee and any other consultation processes which are needed to promote a culture of employee engagement.

Training and Development

  • Liaise with the Learning and Development Manager with training strategy and implementation of training needs.
  • Responsible for the annual appraisal system and the performance management system.
  • Assist with the delivery of in-house courses such as appraisal training.

Compensation

  • Maintain external benchmarking remuneration data, which includes participation in salary surveys and advising re compensation recommendations.
  • Work with appropriate parties on reward strategy.
  • Assist with Company End of Year Remuneration Review preparing data for the Board and Remcom.
  • Responsible for producing Company Gender and Ethnicity Pay Gap Reports.

Benefits & Welfare

  • Responsible for reviewing benefits package to ensure it is competitive, engages and retains employees.
  • Manage the provision of benefits such as medical and dental insurance, and the Group Income Protection Scheme.
  • Responsible for employee welfare and wellness; eg including overseeing the provision of Occupational Health, supporting managers with health and attendance issues, and provision of other medical tests.

Organisation Development

  • Translate the strategic and tactical business plans into HR strategic and operational plans that support the business to achieve its objectives.
  • Assist with Organisational Development issues including succession planning, co-ordinating redundancy exercises, TUPE situations and reorganisations.

Other

  • Provide management information and staffing statistics to track strategic goal accomplishment.
  • Translate key data into effective and commercially focused people strategies.
  • Manage HR systems including sharing responsibility for the HR elements of the database “Workday”.
  • Liaise closely with the CSR Team to develop business links with education/ training agencies in order to support the Company’s commitment to enhancing its profile within local stakeholders.
  • Any other responsibilities as assigned by the Chairman and Board of Directors.

Health Safety and Welfare Responsibilities

Environmental Responsibilities
All staff are required to follow the CWG environmental policies for minimisation of waste and effective energy management as defined in the CWG Environmental Manual and Company Environmental Plans.

Quality Management Responsibilities
All staff are required to comply with the CWG ISO9001 certified Quality Management System and the requirements detailed within Company Quality Manual, Policies and Procedures.

Person Specification
  1. Must have experience of managing and developing a People and Development function.
  2. Must have a proven and detailed knowledge of HR practice including employment law, recruitment, training and development, employee engagement, compensation and benefits.
  3. Must have a leadership approach which is collaborative and fosters engagement.
  4. Must be CIPD qualified and a graduate.
  5. Must have commercial acumen and ability to deliver commercially focused people strategies.
  6. Excellent communication skills are essential with the ability to directly influence practice and build effective and collaborative partnerships at all levels.
  7. Must be able to practice a high level of confidentiality.
  8. Must be able to innovate and embrace change.
  9. Excellent organisation skills and ability to prioritise are essential.
  10. Experience of working in a customer service driven industry, real estate and construction would be desirable.
  11. Experience of using “Workday” would be advantageous.
