Graduate Role in Construction Management

Job Summary: To be responsible to the Construction Manager for the supervision of construction activities.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Deliver unparalleled levels of service for all residents and their gue
  2. As delegated by the Construction Manager, ensure the trade contractors are carrying out their work in accordance with the Contract, including approved method statements, risk assessments and other approved documents relating to Health & Safety, environmental issues and quality.
  3. Discharge responsibilities for Health and Safety as set out in the Canary Wharf Group Health Safety and Welfare manual also the Canary Wharf Group Construction Health and Safety Plan both in respect of the package and integration of the overall project.
  4. Promote and ensure the highest standard of Safety on all works. Carry out Health & Safety audits of Trade Contractors, playing an active role in the development of the safety culture on the project.
  5. Facilitate the work of the contractors, so far as possible, by ensuring the necessary logistic arrangements are set up and operating, while seeking guidance from the Logistics Manager and Senior Management to achieve site objectives.
  6. Assist the Construction Manager by reviewing the programme for subcontractors and monitoring site work progress, providing timely feedback regarding project performance to the Construction Manager and project team.
  7. To actively participate in meetings, ensuring minutes and written records are kept, as required by the Construction Manager.
  8. Compile construction management reports and presentation documents, as guided by the Construction Manager and Senior Management. Recording data as required by the Construction Manager, establishing fluency in company systems to organise tasks and create reports and charts by the application of the following tools:
    • Project Management Software;
    • Asite Document Control Systems;
    • Company InfoBase;
    • Logistics Systems.
  9. Reporting and monitoring of staffing levels to attain planning milestones, to ensure conformance with the project plan.
  10. Assist the Construction Manager in the management of the interface between contractors and in the overall administration of trade staff.
  11. To actively monitor productivity to enable the Construction Manager to maintain maximum labour productivity and cost-effectiveness.
  12. Assist the Construction Manager and the Cost Manager in recording the progress of work and valuation.
  13. Assist the Construction Manager in maintaining quality of all work in accordance with the standards as specified in the design documents.
  14. Recommend corrective action on a timely basis and in accordance with Construction Manager, by recording snags and defects.
  15. Ensure that the condition of the site is maintained to the highest standard, managing the multi-service gang operatives so that the site is kept clean and clear of any unnecessary materials or debris.
  16. Assume the duties of the Construction Manager during periods of his/her absence or when directed by Senior Management.
  17. Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested and assigned by the Construction Manager.

Working Relationships:

  1. Reports to the Construction Manager with regards to the construction activities.
  2. Works closely with the Health and Safety Manager with regards to Health and Safety issues.
  3. Works closely with the Logistics Manager with regards to the logistical requirements of the project.
  4. Works closely with the Canary Wharf Contractors Limited Quality Manager with regards to the quality of the work.
Health Safety & Welfare, Environmental and Quality Management Responsibilities
Health Safety and Welfare Responsibilities
All staff are required to fulfil their legal duty to take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others who may be affected by their acts and omissions, and to follow all guidance and instructions given in this respect. Environmental Responsibilities
All Staff are required to follow the Canary Wharf Group plc (CWG) Environmental Policies for minimisation of waste and effective energy management as defined in the CWG Environmental Manual and associated documents.

Quality Management Responsibilities
All staff are required to comply with CWG Quality Management System requirements detailed within the Company Quality Manual & Policies, and to ensure that all Procedure; Plans and Forms within InfoBase are effectively implemented to meet the set ISO 9001 Quality Management Standard.

Person Specification
  1. A recent graduate (within the last two years) with an interest in developing a career in Construction Management. Ideally, graduated with a degree in Construction Management, Project Management for Construction or Construction Engineering Management.
  2. It is essential that the incumbent has a strong desire to succeed in the Construction sector.
  3. The possession of a positive and helpful attitude is essential, as is a strong customer service orientation.
  4. A conscientious approach with internal and external customers must be taken at all times. It is highly desirable if the incumbent has gained 2 years’ experience in dealing with external parties within either the commercial property or construction sectors, alternatively, training will be provided for the successful candidate.
  5. It is essential that the incumbent is able to maintain excellent working relationships with the rest of the project team and all levels of the organisation, on a one-to-one and group basis.
  6. It is essential that the incumbent be able to prioritise and schedule a constant flow of work.
  7. The individual should possess good communication skills (both verbal and written).
  8. A commitment to continuous improvement is essential to this role, as is the requirement that the incumbent keep up to date with Construction issues.
  9. Computer Literacy is an essential requirement of this role. The incumbent must be adept in the application of IT systems as a reporting tool.
