Employees working for the various companies across the Canary Wharf estate have also been invited.
In addition to the event, Canary Wharf Group plc has arranged for gift packages of food to be delivered to community groups, distributed by schoolchildren.
Elderly residents from the Stepney Day Centre, thanks to sponsorship from Canary Wharf Group, Dennis, Brenner, Schonfeld Square, Sam Beckman, Rubens House and Nightingale House Centres and Homes will be transported to the event. The East London Orthodox Synagogues Association and the Holocaust Centre will also be represented.
Danny Seliger from Canary Wharf Group plc said: “The celebration of Purim at Canary Wharf is part of our tradition of celebrating a range of religious festivals. Purim is a great opportunity to continue our relationship with local community groups.”
Purim is told in the Book of Esther which is read from a scroll called a Megillah. It tells the story of an evil man called Haman who tried to destroy the Jews of the Persian Empire. Customs include eating Hamantaschen, small pastries filled with poppy seeds and sending gifts of food to those in need.
