November 2013 – Media Release

With a fantastic line-up of Christmas festivities, Canary Wharf is the perfect destination for all the family this season. The stunning Canary Wharf Ice Rink returns to Canada Square Park with its cosy retro rink-side bar, along with the enchanting Santa’s Grotto in Jubilee Place, where children can enjoy a personal introduction to Father Christmas himself. With a whole host of activities, such as Santa’s Showtime and Cookie and Cupcake decorating – and over 280 shops, bars and restaurants – Canary Wharf is all set for a magical Christmas.

‘Ice Rink, Canary Wharf’ – Until 16 February 2014

Canary Wharf welcomes back its stunning ice rink, nestled under the soaring buildings of Canada Square. London’s only skate path returns, leading skaters on a glittering trail through fairy-lit trees to add an extra element of excitement.

This year sees an extended season and the rink itself will be bigger and better than ever before. The rink-side Boisdale’s Jukebox Bar by Boisdale of Canary Wharf provides a great place to enjoy some pre- or post- skating refreshments. Watch others glide across the ice from the viewing terrace while tucking into the 50’s themed menu of hotdogs and milkshakes alongside Boisdale’s award-winning wines –including mulled for added warmth!

Lessons are available from fully-qualified National Ice Skating Association (NISA) coaches. Offering lessons for children and grown-ups alike, the experienced team have competed in numerous British Championships – as well as providing tips to the celebs on ITV’s Dancing on Ice – and will have skaters gliding across the ice like professionals in no time.

Santa’s Grotto and Santa’s Showtime – 30 November – 24 December

The magnificent Santa’s Grotto in Canary Wharf’s Jubilee Place will be enjoyed by all; the Grotto is a quirky creation from The Whimsical Cake Company, decked in candy canes, cupcakes, gingerbread men and towering piles of presents. Each December weekend, and from 14 December until Christmas Eve, excited children can visit Santa and his elves in the stunning grotto and, if they whisper their wish list, they might even leave with an early Christmas present! Promising to be an unforgettable spectacle for another year, Santa’s Grotto will be well-worth a visit.

On 7 and 8 December, Santa and friends will take to the stage in the East Wintergarden for a series of entertaining shows – Santa’s Showtime.  Revel in delight as BBC CBeebies presenter and children’s favourite Alex Winters, Santa and all their friends take you through a 30 minute journey filling the air with plenty of Christmas cheer. This annual special event is fun for all the family to enjoy – book early to avoid disappointment.

Children’s Festive Activities – 30 November – 24 December

Adding to the magic and sparkle of Christmas, families are invited to enjoy a programme of free children’s activities throughout Canary Wharf shopping malls. Come along and enjoy a splash of Festive Face Painting, or unleash your Bake-off instincts with Cookie & Cupcake decorating at Canada Place, courtesy of Sweet Couture Cake Boutique. While there, take the opportunity to personalise a ‘Head Bopper’ – a child’s headpiece with dazzling jewels, gems and stickers, or decorate your very own Christmas Bauble to hang on the tree.  Children can also marvel at Canary Wharf’s Enchanted Mirror installation, guaranteed to provide endless fun for young ones in Jubilee Place.

Carols & Candles Service – Tuesday 10 December

Enjoy the festive and community spirit by joining this special service for those working in and around Canary Wharf. Carols will be led by choirs from companies such as HSBC, FCA and KPMG along with members from the Canary Wharf Community Choir with all proceeds going to Street Pastors (Tower Hamlets) charity and Save the Children.

Christmas Rocks at Canary Wharf – Tuesday 17 December

For one night only head to the East Wintergarden to ignite your festive spirit at a spectacular showcase of classic Christmas music and dance. Dust off your vocal cords and sing to favourite songs of the season like Let it Snow, Baby, Its Cold Outside and It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas with the live Trinity Laban band, professional singers and a choir of merry volunteers, or simply sit back and enjoy the spectacle while sipping mulled wine and munching mince pies. To cap it all, the show will include performances by the maverick pianist and songwriter Tokio Myers – a rising star who has supported big names such as Kanye West and Paolo Nutini.
