Community comes together for Pre-Shavuot celebration
International Law firm Clifford Chance LLP today teamed up with Canary Wharf Group plc to host an early celebration for the Jewish festival of Shavuot.
Young and old enjoyed songs from the Menorah Primary School Boys’ Choir and a buffet lunch complete with cheesecake at Clifford Chance’s Upper Bank Street offices in Canary Wharf. Rabbi Atlas – Head of Jewish Studies at Menorah, explained the meaning of Shavuot.
Danny Seliger from Canary Wharf Group, who helped to organise the event, said: “The event allows us to bring people from diverse age groups and walks of life together. It is supported by many of the companies based at Canary Wharf, in particular sponsors Clifford Chance, and involves a number of Jewish Care Community Centres, representatives of the East London Synagogues and Jewish employees working at Canary Wharf and the surrounding areas.”
Guests included members of Jewish Care’s Stepney Community Centre, Dennis Special Day Care Centre, Brenner Community Centre and Nightingale House, Sam Beckman Special Day Care Centre, Schonfeld Square Care Home, East London Orthodox Synagogues Association representatives and employees from multi-national corporations.
Shavuot (also known as Shavuos), the Jewish festival of weeks, marks the giving of the Ten Commandments by G-d to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai. Customs include decorating homes and synagogues with fruit and flowers and eating dairy food such as cheesecake. This year, the festival begins on Thursday evening, 28th May and ends in the evening of Saturday 30th May.
