Canary Wharf unveils A Table from the Sea’s Edge
Canary Wharf Group has unveiled the latest addition to its award-winning public art programme: A Table from the Sea’s Edge by Silas Birtwistle. The large conference table and 12 accompanying chairs, situated in Jubilee Place Shopping Mall in Canary Wharf, are made entirely of driftwood collected from four of the most beautiful corners of the earth – British Columbia, Belize, Tanzania and Borneo, and form part of an internationally-acclaimed art project raising awareness of environmental conservation and marine biodiversity.
Created during the International Year of Biodiversity in 2010, some of the world’s most influential decision makers and high-profile politicians have been hosted at the table, critical environmental issues have been debated, and agreements signed and concluded. It was used as a platform at the historic UN summit on biodiversity in Japan, 2010, and has since travelled to the World Economic Forum in Davos, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Liverpool’s World Museum, The SouthBank Centre, and Save The Children International.
The table has seated the likes of Harrison Ford, Tony Blair, Mayor of London Boris Johnson, WWF Director General Jim Leape, UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner, the UN High-Level Group of Sustainable Energy for All, and Greenpeace Executive Director Kumi Naidoo.
Now residing in Canary Wharf’s Jubilee Place, artist Silas Birtwistle is looking for a final resting place for his unique sculpture. Profits from the sale will go directly to the local communities, schools, businesses and NGOs who have been closely involved in the project. The installation tells the story of each of these communities and addresses the ethical issues of sustainable development and environmental awareness of the seas, oceans and coasts.
Commenting on the art work, John Garwood, Group Company Secretary at Canary Wharf Group says: “This is a beautiful and practical work of art that has some history behind it. We are proud to host it in Canary Wharf, not least because it provokes thought about what needs to be done to protect the natural environment.”
