Friday 5 June 2015 – Media Release

Canary Wharf Jazz Festival 2015 Highlights include ESKA and Neil Cowley Trio

As another eventful year marches on, music lovers can look forward to August when London’s largest free jazz festival returns to Canada Square Park for three thrilling days of live music from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 August. This year’s Canary Wharf Jazz Festival will present another sterling line-up from some of the very best names in jazz. Headliners include, Son Of Kemet, Edwin Sanz ‘San Augustin’ Salsa Orchestra featuring Alex Wilson and Neil Cowley Trio.

The festival opens at 7pm with a hard-hitting performance from The Rawness, a fresh new project, featuring guitarist Alex Hutchings and alto saxophonist James Morton, which fuses funk, soul, jazz and hip-hop. This will be followed by MOBO award-winners, Son Of Kemet, whose revolutionary mix of music spans jazz, rock, dub and Caribbean folk. Their 2013 debut album, Burn (Naim Records) was one of the true standout releases of that year, but they are a band that demands to be heard live.

Saturday’s programme opens at 3.15pm with a set from the Peter Edwards Trio, featuring Max Luthert on bass and Eddie Hick on drums. Pianist, composer and bandleader, Peter Edwards was voted 2015 Jazz Newcomer at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards and his debut album, Safe and Sound was amongst MOJO’s Top 10 Jazz Albums of 2014. Next up will be The Filthy Six, one of the most exciting and authentic soul jazz groups in the UK today. Soaring horns, blistering guitar and gut-wrenching Hammond are fuelled by one of the hardest grooving rhythm sections around. There will be a very special performance from ESKA, who has been described by no less than Laura Mvula as “the finest female vocalist in the UK.” ESKA, whose 2015 debut album has attracted huge critical acclaim, weaves together diverse musical elements, with hints of folk, soul, psychedelia and electronica, pairing them with stirring lyrics to create music that is pure and timeless. Appropriately, Saturday night will close with a true party atmosphere as Edwin Sanz ‘San Agustin’ Salsa Orchestra, featuring Alex Wilson gets the crowd on their feet. The hugely versatile and multifaceted Venezuelan percussionist, Edwin Sanz, alongwith his band, released one of the best salsa albums of 2014 and were also voted ‘the best Latin act’ at last year’s Glastonbury Festival.

Sunday’s set will get underway from 1.30pm with hypnotic Middle Eastern riffs, infectious belly-dancing rhythms and haunting melodies fused with jazz and free improvisation, courtesy of Yazz Ahmed: Family Hafla. Dylan Howe’s latest album Subterranean, comprising arrangements of David Bowie’s music from his ‘Berlin Trilogy’ received outstanding critical acclaim and a message to Dylan from Bowie, which read “That’s a top-notch album you’ve got there. Really.” Don’t miss Dylan Howe’s Subterraneans live in Canada Square Park. This year’s penultimate set comes from The Fontanelles, the group to grow out of FELA!, the groundbreaking show telling the life story of Nigerian icon, Fela Kuti. Now with a strong identity all of their own, they play original music that takes in influences from the Nigerian master himself to dub, Ethio funk, jazz, film scores and beyond.

Neil Cowley Trio headlines this year’s Canary Wharf Jazz Festival. NCT first burst onto the scene in 2006 with a debut that turned the concept of piano trio on its head. Fizzing with energy, their rip-roaring riffs and hook laden tunes sit side by side with expansive and gracefully elegant passages. Live, NCT are masters of intoxication and powerfully moving shows and must not be missed. Expect to hear some material from their latest album, Touch and Flee.

About Canary Wharf Group
Canary Wharf Group plc is an iconic London real estate business which has overseen the largest urban regeneration project ever undertaken in Europe. We design, build and manage a unique set of assets to serve local and international companies, renowned retailers and some of the UK’s most exciting technology start-ups.

Our vision is to create truly great places where people want to work, live and relax. Over the past 25 years we have developed 16 million square feet of London’s disused docklands into one of the world’s foremost business districts, with more than 11 million square feet to come. Canary Wharf is home to the global and regional headquarters of leading names in law, banking, financial and professional services, media and technology.

The Canary Wharf Estate is fast evolving into one of London’s most exciting hubs. Alongside high quality offices for established companies, the Estate is a major retail destination that includes five shopping malls, including the new leisure development, Crossrail Place, housing one of London’s most stunning roof gardens.  The Estate is also home to Level39, Europe’s most influential financial technology accelerator, and the Cognicity smart cities technology initiative.

We will soon deliver a major residential building programme, providing thousands of new homes for Londoners. Outside of Canary Wharf, the Group has a stake in the 20 Fenchurch Street (‘Walkie Talkie’) development in the City of London and in the Shell Centre redevelopment on London’s South Bank. We are in the business of place-making and continue to create cityscapes of and for the future.

The Group’s world-class, year-round arts and events programme offers over 100 diverse and culturally inspiring events performed throughout the Estate. Winner of the 2010 Christie’s Award for Best Corporate Art Collection and Programme at the International Art and Work Awards, Canary Wharf Group showcases over 65 pieces of permanent art throughout the Estate, designed and created by more than 50 artists and craftsmen. A regular exhibition programme in the Lobby of One Canada Square and Jubilee Park further adds to the Estate’s comprehensive cultural and creative offering.

We employ over 1000 people and there is a working population at Canary Wharf of 105,000 people. The arrival of Crossrail trains in 2018 will strengthen the resilience of the existing transport infrastructure, doubling capacity and cutting journey times into central London and further afield. It will take 39 minutes to get to Heathrow airport, while City airport is just 10 minutes away.

Canary Wharf Group is a wholly owned joint venture between Brookfield Property Partners and the Qatar Investment Authority, two of the world’s largest commercial real estate and fund companies. The Group was acquired in March 2015 and as part of this process, Songbird, the former majority owner of Canary Wharf Group, delisted from the London Stock Exchange’s Alternative Investment Market.

The Canary Wharf Group board of directors consists of ten directors; two executive directors, and four non-executive directors from Brookfield and QIA respectively.
